🎧  Listen to Introduction

Yangko, commonly known as "shehuo", is very popular in Hengshan. It is a mass art activity that is familiar to everyone and loved by all ages and has been passed down from generation to generation. During major festivals such as the New Year, Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, and National Day, workers, farmers, students, and cadres perform yangko to liven up the atmosphere. Especially during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival, yangko is performed throughout urban and rural areas. Yangko is a comprehensive performance form of various art programs. It is performed along the door during the day and on the big field and sings congratulatory tunes at night. At the same time, waist drums, dragon lanterns, lions, bamboo horses, stilts, overlord whips, fan dances and other programs are often interspersed in the yangko team, which is called big yangko. The dynamic characteristics of yangko are "twisting", "swaying", and "walking", which are also mixed with singing. The so-called singing and dancing is the biggest feature of yangko. Hengshan yangko has a great influence on the yangko in the Yan'an area. As early as the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, artists from Yuanzhuangke, Wuzhen and other places went to Zhenwudong and Xihekou in Yan'an and Ansai to spread their art. When Hengshan was hit by a disaster in the 17th year of the Republic of China (1928), many artists fled to Yan'an and other places, spreading Hengshan Yangge there. In 1946, Li Yinghai, an artist from Zhangcunyou in Nanta Township, organized a yangge team with the famous labor hero Yang Buhao (formerly from Yangjialou, Shiwan Town, Hengshan County) in Liuxiang, Chuankou District, Yan'an. They first performed in the township and caused a sensation. Later, the border government organized them to pay New Year's greetings to Chairman Mao and Commander-in-Chief Zhu. Traditional Hengshan Yangge also has a strong superstitious color, such as "visiting the temple" and "turning the nine bends". Generally, the old temple fair takes the lead in organizing the yangge team. When performing along the gate, they also "donate" to the temple. The rise of the new yangge in Yan'an in 1942 transformed Hengshan Yangge from content to form, and greatly improved its ideological and artistic qualities. Hengshan waist drum has been around for a long time. It was formed and developed by the working people in the long-term production, life and war practice. There are 2, 4 and 8 people playing against each other. Its animals are vigorous and powerful, majestic and bold, with varied steps, beautiful dance postures, clear drum beats, and alternating playing methods. In combination with wind and percussion music, life is active, and watching makes people excited and gives people strength. Waist drums are generally interspersed in yangko teams, but there are also solo performances. Traditional waist drums are limited to men kicking and beating. After the 1960s, women also played, but the action style is different from that of men. Hengshan waist drum has a great influence. In October 1984, Shenzhen and Shekou jointly filmed a TV crew in Yulin to shoot "Desert Style", and took a scene of Zhang Cunyoudi and Li Yinghai's waist drum "Welcome the Land Reform Team to the Village". In 1985, "Hengshan Waist Drum" compiled by Qiang Kai of Shaanxi Song and Dance Troupe participated in the performance of folk art festivals in Portugal, Spain and France. In 2007, Hengshan Waist Drum was named "Hengshan Old Waist Drum" and successfully applied for the first batch of intangible cultural heritage protection list in Shaanxi Province. In 2008, it was approved by the Ministry of Culture as the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection list.
