In Fa Town, Shuangbai County, there is a small Yi village called Xiaomaichong. The Yi people here worship tigers devoutly, and dancing the tiger sheng is a custom of the Yi people. Because of the long history of respecting tigers and dancing the tiger sheng, Xiaomaichong has become the birthplace of the Yi tiger sheng. Tiger sheng Every year from the eighth to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, when the horse cherry blossoms in the Ailao Mountains are in full bloom, the Yi people in Xiaomaichong Village, Fa Township, Shuangbai County celebrate a unique festival, the Tiger God Festival, which the local people call "Luoma". On this day, all the adult men in the village gather at a black stone shaped like a tiger behind the village, and let the wizard select eight people by divination. They are dressed as "tigers" with felt, and their hands and feet are painted with tiger patterns. Under the leadership of the "black tiger head", they dance primitive reproduction, production, and life dances in the square. In these dances, we can clearly see the movements of ploughing the fields, pulling up rice seedlings and threshing, and hunting in the mountains, which reminds people of the origin of art. After the ancient dance, the wizard led the "black tigers" to drive away ghosts from house to house, which is called "Luoma Naihong" in Yi language. Experts believe that this is a relic of the Yi ancestors' tiger totem worship and an important source of Nuo opera. The Yi people in Xiaomaidi Chong celebrate the Tiger Festival at the beginning of the lunar year every year, starting from the eighth day of the first lunar month to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. The festival consists of offering sacrifices to tigers, inviting tigers, drawing tigers, jumping tigers, and sending tigers. The tiger Sheng danced by the Yi people in Xiaomaidi Chong consists of 12 sets of tiger dances such as tiger tiptoeing, tiger running on toes, tiger opening the door, tiger wagging its tail, and a series of dances reflecting production labor such as tiger carrying dung, tiger plowing the field, tiger sowing seeds, tiger transplanting rice, and tiger cutting grain. Although the tiger Sheng is a primitive dance derived from the folk, it reflects the Yi ancestors' view of worshipping tigers, the harmonious development concept of harmonious coexistence between man and nature, and the rough, bold, and hardworking character of the Yi people. It not only carries the important historical and cultural information and original memory of the Yi people, but also is a symbol and sign of harmony between people and nature, and is also a platform for the inheritance of Yi traditional culture. It has high anthropological, ethnological and folklore values, and is known as the "living fossil" of Yi tiger culture. The tiger sheng has a broad mass base in the local area and has a strong influence on the outside world. During the "Cultural Revolution", as the trend of sweeping away the "four olds" swept and spread across the country, the tiger sheng of Xiaomaidi Chong was not spared. After the reform and opening up, like many other local cultures and traditional folk customs that have been restored and inherited and developed, the Tiger Festival in Xiaomaidi Chong has become a grand festival for the local Yi people, and dancing the tiger sheng has become the favorite of the Yi people in Xiaomaidi Chong. With the inheritance and development of the Tiger Festival of the Yi people, the tiger sheng has been invited to perform in Japan, France, and South Korea, and has appeared on CCTV and domestic large-scale cultural events many times, and won the gold medal in the Nuo dance performance at the 2005 China (Jiangxi) International Folk Nuo Culture and Art Festival. In 2008, the "Shuangbai Yi Tiger Sheng" was included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection list by the State Council. In 2009, Shuangbai County and Fa Town were named "China's Yi Tiger Culture Hometown" and "Yi Tiger Sheng Hometown" by the Ministry of Culture.
