🎧  Listen to Introduction

The "Tanggong Haozi" is a labor song sung by the people of Haiyan during the construction of the seawall. It is mainly distributed in three towns and one district along the coast of Haiyan County, including Qinshan Town, Wuyuan Town, Xitangqiao Town, and Haiyan Economic Development Zone. Haiyan is located at the mouth of the Qiantang River. Historically, it has often been hit by tides and the coastline has been constantly swallowed up. From the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty, the southwest section of the coastline was swallowed up by 15 kilometers and the southeast section was swallowed up by 25 kilometers. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the tide continued to swallow up more than 5 kilometers of the coastline, causing Wanghai Town and Ninghai Town to sink into the seabed one after another. By the Ming Dynasty, the sea tide had approached Wuyuan Town, only half a mile away from the city wall of the county. In order to defend against the invasion of sea tides and protect people's lives and property, people built dikes and repaired ponds again and again, gradually transitioning from primitive earth ponds to firewood ponds, earth and stone ponds, stone ponds, and pile foundation stones. In modern times, they have been changed to mortar stone ponds, cement ponds, and reinforced cement ponds. When building the seawall, local people used collectively created labor songs to coordinate labor and boost morale. This is the "Tanggong Haozi". There are many kinds of pond workers' songs, and different types of work have different songs, such as prying stone songs, carrying stone songs, and pile driving songs. The melodies of pond workers' songs are varied, with a magnificent momentum and a bold and rough style. The lyrics are composed and sung at will, and the language is simple and humorous. When singing the song, one person leads the singing and the others echo. The sound of the song rises and falls, resounding through the sky, and the scene is quite spectacular. In the labor of building seawalls in successive dynasties, pond workers' songs have been continuously inherited and developed. Since the 20th century, with the development of society and the modernization of seawall construction methods, the primitive labor methods have gradually been eliminated, and pond workers' songs have gradually faded out of the labor scene and are on the verge of extinction. At present, the representative inheritors include Huang Zhaofa, Yang Maoxiong, Huang Shiguan, Zhou Zhufa, Jiang Liuguan, Jiang Hongguang, Song Hongguang, Lin Xinguan and other 17 people. The pond workers' songs show the hardworking and simple folk customs of Haiyan, carry forward the spirit of unity and hard work of the people of Haiyan, and are an important part of Haiyan's local culture. In recent years, folk art workers have recorded and rescued the Tanggong Haozi, adapted it into art programs, and put it on stage. In 1973, Haiyan County Cultural Center used the music melody of the Tanggong Haozi to create a male performance of "Busy Reclamation of Land from the Sea". The program participated in the provincial, prefectural (municipal) art performances and won awards. In 1974, the music materials of the Tanggong Haozi were included in the teaching materials of the Central Conservatory of Music. Related programs have appeared on large-scale art stages at the provincial, municipal and county levels many times and have won wide acclaim. The Tanggong Haozi has been included in the second batch of Zhejiang Province's intangible cultural heritage list.
