At the end of the Ming Dynasty, people in Quchangcheng Village performed puppet shows. Artists used bamboo poles and white cloth to make a small stage about one meter long and 0.6 meters wide. The upper end of the front was the stage entrance. The performers and their band hid behind the stage, singing or whistling the music instead of the lines, while operating the puppets to perform movements. The instruments included small drums, small cymbals, small gongs, banhu, erhu, sanxian, etc. They mainly performed folk dramas and some Jin opera excerpts, which had a strong local flavor. In the Ming Dynasty, there was a man named Si, whose name was unlucky. Because of his poor family background, he went out to Beijing and other places to make a living. He learned puppet skills in other places and made props for performance after returning home. The original music score was Peking Opera, and it was later passed on to Si Baoshan to sing Jin opera music. After that, it was inherited and developed, and the facial makeup of the opera characters was painted, and the Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou were matched. Silk strings and percussion instruments, puppet costumes and headwear, as well as knives, guns, swords, halberds and other props were all available. In the 1940s, they performed in Zhangjiakou, Xuanhua, surrounding areas of Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and other places. In 1953, they participated in the rural mass performance of the whole county and were rewarded by the county government. In 1959, they participated in the performance in Wei County and won the Outstanding Performance Award. It was not until the Cultural Revolution that the performance was stopped and all the equipment of the puppet troupe was destroyed. As a folk art, Qu Changcheng puppet has important artistic value and practical performance value. The artistic value includes: stage construction art, puppet making art, prop making art, character painting art, puppet performance art, music score singing art, whistle blowing and making art, instrument playing art, etc. As a local art, Qu Changcheng puppet show is deeply loved by the local people and people in the surrounding areas. It has played a role in promoting the cultural life of the masses, promoting the construction of spiritual civilization, and building a harmonious society. Qu Changcheng puppet show has resumed activities this year, but its inheritance and development are difficult. First, the artists are aging; second, there is no one to inherit; third, there is a lack of asset investment. Therefore, it is urgent to protect the art of Qu Changcheng puppet show.
