Jinjiang glove puppetry is also known as the southern glove puppetry, which refers to the hand puppetry in Quanzhou. It is sung in Quanzhou dialect, which is different from the northern glove puppetry in Zhangzhou, which sings in northern tunes. In July 1951, the Minnan glove puppetry was named the hand puppetry, which is a rare type of puppetry in my country. The southern glove puppetry is popular in the southern Fujian region. Its origin can be traced back to the historical records in the "Records of the Lost" of the Jin Dynasty, the "Hua Shu" of the Five Dynasties, and the "Si Mo Yuan Ri" of the Southern Song Dynasty. From the middle of the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty, it was the period of the rise and development of the southern glove puppetry. According to folk legends and the "Taiwan General History", the glove puppetry emerged during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. The founder was Liang Binglin, who was later known as the "number one in drama". In the middle of the Qing Dynasty, glove puppetry performances in Jinjiang and other places flourished and spread to Taiwan. At the same time, famous artists such as Li Kecha appeared. In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, some famous glove puppetry troupes in various counties of Quanzhou emerged, such as the "Five Tigers" in southern Fujian during the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty. During the Republic of China period, puppet troupes in Anxi, Hui'an and other places were almost all over the county. But on the eve of the founding of the People's Republic of China, due to the economic recession, the puppet troupes in the counties of Quanzhou were in a difficult situation. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the southern style of puppetry gained a new life. In the 1950s, Jinjiang and other counties organized the excavation and recording of more than 200 puppet dramas and music tunes. Since the new era, the southern style of puppetry has been further developed, and its main carrier is the Jinjiang City Palm Puppet Theater Troupe. Over the past 50 years since the establishment of the troupe, it has performed in Beijing many times. Participated in drama competitions and international puppet festivals, and won provincial and national awards. The repertoires "Princess White Dragon" and "Five Miles of Long Rainbow" won the Ministry of Culture and the Ninth Wenhua Award. The southern style of puppetry is characterized by eclecticism and learning from others, and has obvious regional cultural characteristics. Its artistic style is unique, the division of roles is meticulous, the puppet head carving is both realistic and vivid, the performance is delicate, and the movements are vivid, which is deeply loved by the audience. However, due to the influence of the current commodity economy, this traditional art form has been constantly impacted. If it is not protected, it will face the crisis of extinction.
