Puppet show, also known as "Bo Lao Opera" or "Pole Opera", is a form of drama in which actors manipulate wooden puppets behind the scenes. According to the county annals, puppet show has a history of more than 150 years in Qianshan County. Since the late Qing Dynasty, puppet show has been popular and loved by the masses. It is mainly concentrated in the Wumiao and Huangpu areas. Puppet show performances are required for sacrifices, festivals and folk activities. Most of the repertoires are Huangmei Opera Three-Book and Seventy-Two Small Circles. It is not an independent drama, but is based on the voice sung by puppet show artists. Qianshan County puppet show used to sing Gaoqiang and Huidiao before the Republic of China, and basically sang Huangmei Opera after the Republic of China. During the Cultural Revolution, puppet show was included in the "Four Olds" and was swept away, and the artists stopped their activities. In the 1980s, the County Cultural Bureau actively sought to register and issue licenses for puppet show artists and encouraged them to carry out activities. However, due to the passing of old artists, changes in social concepts, strong economic impact, cultural diversification, different entertainment preferences of young people, and a sharp decline in audiences, puppet shows are facing a crisis of survival. Puppet art lacks successors and is facing the risk of extinction. In view of this, it is urgent to save this endangered art. The county intangible cultural heritage protection center rose to the challenge, collecting and organizing archival materials on the one hand, and organizing performances on the other hand, for living inheritance.
