Quanzhou puppet show, formerly known as "hanging puppet", is now called marionette show. Marionette show is commonly known as "Jiali" in the folks of southern Fujian, also known as string play. It originated in the Qin and Han Dynasties. When Wang Shenzhi entered Fujian and proclaimed himself king in the late Tang Dynasty, puppet show was introduced to Quanzhou. By the Song Dynasty, it had become widely popular among the people of Quanzhou. In the Ming Dynasty, Quanzhou puppet show had broken away from the "puppet show" form of fragments and acrobatic performances, and could perform large-scale historical dramas.
