The dragon dance in Shaxi originated from the ancient Xiangjiao Village. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, an epidemic broke out in the village. In order to dispel evil and eliminate disasters, the villagers sent gentry to Foshan, an ancient town in southern Guangdong, where there was a "dragon", to invite the "dragon" dance. Since then, every major folk festival, especially the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, dragon dances are paraded in the streets to pray for peace and good fortune. After the "dragon" was born, during the Tongzhi period of the late Qing Dynasty, a villager named Peng Shu made a phoenix by himself to create a peaceful atmosphere of "dragons flying and phoenixes dancing". He also took time out of his day to observe the movements of storks, cranes and other birds flying, foraging, and playing by the river bank and the grave foundation. He realized a set of basic movement structures for the phoenix dance and created a unique system of "dragon and phoenix dance".
