🎧  Listen to Introduction

Dragon dance, also known as "dragon lantern dance", has a long history. According to the "Overview of Northern Shaanxi Culture", it originated in the Yellow Emperor period. Legend has it that there was a large-scale song and dance called "Qingjiao" at that time, in which people played the role of dragons. The custom of dragon dance has finally formed the folk dance that people like today through long-term development and evolution. Regarding the image of the dragon, Li Shizhen said in "Compendium of Materia Medica" that its body is like a snake, its face is like a horse, its horns are like deer, its ears are like cows, its belly is like a clam, its scales are like carp, its claws are like eagles, and its paws are like tigers. To make a "dragon", bamboo strips are first tied into dragon sections, and then the sections are connected to form the dragon body. The surface is covered with paper or cloth, and then painted with colors. The dragon's eyes are equipped with light bulbs that are turned on and off by people, and there is a wooden handle below for the dragon dancer to hold. The dragon dance is usually performed in the streets or squares during the first month of the New Year or large celebrations. The dance begins with a person with certain martial arts skills holding a red round ball and directing the "dragon" to fly into the air, circle and dash forward to the accompaniment of gongs and drums. The dragon dance is flexible and skillful, and good at changing, like waves. The whole scene is magnificent and lively, and is deeply loved by people.
