Preah Vihear Temple is located on the edge of a plateau in the Cambodian plains and is dedicated to the god Shiva. The temple consists of a series of sanctuaries connected by a system of walkways and stairs on an 800-meter-long axis and dates back to the first half of the 11th century AD. Nevertheless, its complex history dates back to the 9th century, when the hermitage was established. The site is exceptionally well preserved, mainly due to its remote location. The site's architectural quality is extraordinary, adapted to the natural environment and the temple's religious function, and its carved stone decoration is also of extraordinary quality.
