Fu's woodcarving is named after the Fu family as the main way of inheritance. It is an important type of woodcarving art in my country. It is famous for its long history, strong regional characteristics, unique inheritance, wide range of dissemination, continuous, generational inheritance, and unique artistic style. Fu's woodcarving is mainly distributed in Qiancheng Town, Anjiang Town, Xuefeng Town, Pingcun, Huitong County, Huangmaoyuan Town, Longtan Town, Dongkouyanshan Township, Shanmen Town, Hongjiang City, Huaihua City, and spread to Xiangxi and Guizhou. According to the "Fu Family Tree", "Fu Yufeng, the 84th generation of the Fu family, fled from Pinglu, Shanxi to Xinyu, Jiangxi with his wife and children in the 14th year of Zhizheng in the Yuan Dynasty (1354) due to the war and chaos, and made a living by carving. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, he moved from Jiangxi to Huguang. His son Fu Yansun and the second son Fu Dingsun moved their family from Xinyu, Jiangxi to Baoqing (now Wugang) to make bamboo and wood carvings and teach apprentices. In the 23rd year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1756), Fu Xiangdong (now Panxi Village, Yanshan Township, Dongkou) worshipped Baoqing bamboo and wood carving artist Fu Youxian as his teacher." Since then, Fu's wood carving has been passed down in the family. Fu's wood carving began in the Song and Yuan Dynasties and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It has continued for more than 600 years. Fu's wood carvings are mainly divided into five categories: sacrificial wood carvings (Buddha-like), architectural decorative wood carvings, furniture wood carvings, decorative wood carvings and giant tree stump carvings. Fu's wood carvings have developed from single carvings to group carvings, and from ordinary round carvings to giant tree stump carvings. The skills are more sophisticated, the themes are more extensive, and the works are more perfect. Wood carvings have both the grandeur of Central Plains culture and the beauty of Hunan culture. Whether it is a small and delicate decorative craft. Or a large Buddha sculpture, whether it is a decorative wood carving for buildings, or a giant tree stump carving work, its knife skills are simple and round, fine and smooth, and the figures have both form and spirit. The shape is lifelike. In Fu's wood carving works, a variety of wood carving techniques are integrated and used freely. It reflects a strong sense of artistic beauty. Especially in the works "Group of Immortals Celebrating Birthday" and "Hibiscus Wonderland" by wood carving masters Fu Zhenyuan and Fu Zhaohuai, they fully utilized a variety of difficult wood carving techniques such as round carving, relief carving, hollow carving, and multi-layer carving in terms of themes and carving techniques. The works are rich in layers and magnificent in momentum. With the scattered-point and bird's-eye perspective composition characteristics of traditional Chinese paintings, the numerous characters and story plots are fully expressed in the works. The natural beauty of the story scenes and tree stumps in the works gives people a shocking and fresh and elegant aesthetic impression. Fu's wood carving has produced many masters from ancient times to the present. Famous artists include Fu Youxian, Fu Xiangdong, Fu Zhuxian, Fu Changyan, Fu Zhenyuan, and Fu Zhaohuai. Their works are sold at home and abroad. In particular, Master Fu Zhenyuan began to learn his art at the age of thirteen and has been in the art for more than 60 years. He has established Dongkou County Craft Factory, Huangqiao Town Bamboo Carving Factory, and Yanshan Township Export Craft Factory. Master Fu Zhenyuan has also served as the chief product designer of these three craft factories. He carves the works for the Canton Fair every year and has created countless artistic masterpieces, with teak carving, boxwood carving, and camphor wood carving as the main materials. His main works include: "The Heavenly Girl Scattering Flowers", "Fishing and Killing the Family", "The Peach Blossom Spring Oath", "The Eighteen Arhats", "The First Meeting of Bao Dai", "Mu Guiying Takes Command", etc., which have made great contributions to China's arts and crafts industry and export earnings. The largest tree carving works in China, "Hibiscus Wonderland" and "The Birthday Celebration of the Group of Immortals", created by him and his son Fu Zhaohuai, are innovative works in the current art world. They have been identified as "National First-Class Cultural Relics" and "National Third-Class Cultural Relics" by experts in the cultural and museum circles, and are permanently treasured and have become the treasure of the Huaihua Museum, creating a miracle of modern arts and crafts treasures. In 1982 and 1986, the architectural decorative wood carvings of Fu Zhenyuan and Fu Zhaohuai in the Furong Building in Qiancheng have also become artistic treasures in the national key cultural relics protection units. The influence and contribution of Fu's wood carvings enjoy a well-known reputation both at home and abroad. After generations of artistic tempering by Fu's family artists, Fu's wood carving art has developed into a wood carving school with unique artistic theories and artistic styles, forming a complete wood carving art system. It is a treasure of Hunan culture, containing the wisdom and humanistic cultivation of the Chinese nation. Fu Zhaohuai himself has won many awards: in 2006, he won the National Arts and Crafts Award for the Most Collectible Value, and in 2010, he won the title of the most influential Chinese artist in the world in the 21st century. Fu's works have become popular artworks collected by the market and collectors. However, in the past 20 years, people's lives have changed greatly. Traditional wood carvings are no longer used to decorate modern buildings. Fu's skilled and exquisite craftsmanship has lost the environment on which it depends and has gradually declined. It is difficult for modern young people to concentrate on traditional skills and most of them go out to work. In addition, Fu's wood carvings are inherited by the family, and they adhere to the family motto of passing on skills to men but not women, and passing them to the family but not to outsiders. As a result, the inheritance of skills is facing the risk of loss, newcomers are unable to continue, and there is a serious loss of professionals. It must be rescued and protected as soon as possible.
