Xiangyuan Community (formerly Xiangyuan Village) in Xiangyuan Street, Jin'an District, Fuzhou City is the birthplace of Fuzhou woodcarving and root carving art, and is also the gathering place of famous woodcarving and root carving masters in Fuzhou. The artistic creation of woodcarving and root carving has a long history. On August 28, 2007, "Fuzhou Woodcarving (Xiangyuan)" was included in the second batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage list of Fujian Province. Fuzhou woodcarving developed from carvings of Buddha statues, buildings, furniture decorations, etc. in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. During the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, Ke Shiren, a famous woodcarving artist in Xiangyuan, first used boxwood as raw material and created boxwood round sculptures with Fuzhou local characteristics. At that time, Kong from Changle, who lived in Fuzhou, took a different approach and used natural tree root scars to make various figures and animals, which were lifelike. The Xiangyuan woodcarving artists were deeply influenced and followed suit. Since the first year of the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, Xiangyuan has produced many famous artists, such as Ke Chuancan, Ke Chuanzhong, Ke Shici, Yu Lianke, Ke Shiren, Ke Qingyuan, etc., all of whom are masters of carving, each with its own characteristics and all the rage. Fuzhou Xiangyuan woodcarving has a unique and complete set of carving techniques, with longan wood and boxwood as the main materials. Longan woodcarving works are simple and generous, rough and unique, and the figures are accurate and vivid. Boxwood carvings are delicate and lifelike, and vivid and refined. Xiangyuan woodcarving retains the original color and texture of the wood, and appears smooth, delicate, exquisite and smooth. Woodcarving themes are wide-ranging, including figures, landscapes, birds, animals, flowers, fish and insects. Fuzhou Xiangyuan woodcarving is a gathering of talents, which complements woodcarving and root carving from all over the country. In the Chinese root carving circle, there is a saying that "Chinese root carving can be seen in Fujian, Fujian root carving can be seen in Fuzhou, and Fuzhou root carving can be seen in Xiangyuan."
