Shangyu paper-cutting has a long history and was popular during the Tang and Song dynasties. As the original pattern of embroidery paper-cutting, embroidery paper-cutting has been closely associated with shoes, hats, clothing and various embroidery objects. Since embroidery paper-cutting works are difficult to preserve, it is difficult to verify their historical age. The poem "Walking in the Suburbs on the Day of the Beginning of Spring" by the Southern Song poet Fan Chengda describes the customs of welcoming the spring by whipping the spring ox and wearing golden banners and colorful flags. "The bamboos surround the bridge over the creek and the wheat covers the slope. Where the cattle walk, there are also music and singing. The willows are about to be darkened by the wind, and the wine is just beginning to make light waves. The sun is full in front of the county and the spring market is closed. The tide is flat and there are many tents at the port. There is no drinking and no words in spring, what can I do with these golden banners and colorful banners!" The custom of "golden banners and colorful banners" is that every spring day, women cut paper and silk into ornaments or small banners (long banners hanging down) and wear them on their heads or tie them under flowers to celebrate the arrival of spring and give them to each other. According to relevant historical records, as early as the Han Dynasty, there were silk "spring banners" in the spring worship ceremony of Qingshen. It was popular among the people to cut silk fabrics into small banners and wear them on their heads, which was called "cutting ribbons". Embroidery paper-cutting appeared in the Southern Song Dynasty, and embroidery patterns were extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty. The folk paper-cutting in our city is divided into four major parts, one is embroidery paper-cutting; the second is Taoist paper-cutting; the third is folk wedding paper-cutting. Birthday and happy paper-cutting; the fourth is modern creative paper-cutting. Among them, embroidery paper-cutting is popular among the people, with a wide variety of styles, and its works are preserved through embroidery. Taoist paper-cutting is used in specific rituals and destroyed after use. The works are stylized, but the styles are different. Festive paper-cutting is mostly "Double Happiness", "Phoenix", "Happy Bird", "Phoenix Peony", "Fu Lu Shou Xi", as well as animals, flowers, text patterns, etc. After liberation, some amateur art workers, based on folk paper-cutting, created ideological, artistic, and thematic paper-cutting (carving) products, further enriching the expressiveness of folk paper-cutting. In June 2006, it was included in the first batch of Shaoxing City's intangible cultural heritage list.
