Paper-cutting is a traditional folk art with unique style in northern Shaanxi Province, with a long history and passed down from generation to generation. The main types include window paper-cuts, kang murals (kang fences), ceiling paintings, board frame hanging paintings, children's shoe toe paintings, belly wrap paintings, etc. The themes are wide-ranging, mostly from life, such as cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, chickens and other livestock and poultry, flowers, insects, birds, fish, birds and beasts, as well as drama characters, folk stories, mascots, folk customs, farming, textiles, breeding, trade, festivals and celebrations, etc., can all become paper-cut images, with ancient shapes, rough styles, interesting meanings, diverse forms, and exquisite skills. The most famous paper-cutting in northern Shaanxi is Ansai paper-cutting, which was once praised by the Ministry of Culture as the "Hometown of Chinese Folk Art Paper-cutting".
