Xu's brush making technique
Xu's brush making skills are the brush making skills of Jiangxi Zhou Huchen inherited by Xu Diquan in Taishan Street, Pukou. Xu Diquan was born into a family of brush makers. As early as the end of the Qing Dynasty, Xu Diquan's great grandfather Xu Jiyang was engaged in brush making skills in Jinxian, Jiangxi. His son Xu Wenhan (born in 1916, Xu Diquan's grandfather) later opened a brush shop in Yannian Lane, Xinjiekou, Nanjing, and bought land and settled in Pukou. The business closed during the Anti-Japanese War. Later, the Xu family moved between Pukou and his hometown in Jiangxi. When Xu Diquan was a child, he learned to make brushes from his grandfather and father while going to school. In 1995, he went to his hometown in Jiangxi to learn brush making from Zhou Pengcheng, a famous brush maker. In 1999, he engaged in professional brush making in Taishan Street, Pukou District. The brush shop he opened was registered as "Xu Laosan Brush Shop" in 2010. Xu Diquan's brush-making style has always followed the traditional production method of Gan brushes from his ancestors as the basic rule. The wolf-hair water brush is the main product. It is operated in the form of a shop in front and a factory in the back. The production process adopts the compatible form of Jiangxi and Zhejiang. It fully absorbs the "slope stacking method" production process of Hu brushes, so that the performance of the brush is closely connected with the style of calligraphy and painting to form its own characteristics. Brush-making skills are an excellent traditional handicraft in my country. The animal hair used for making pens is commonly used, such as goat hair, weasel tail, mountain rabbit hair, Huai rabbit hair, etc. When making pens, the selection of hair is very strict. It is known as "selecting one hair from millions of hairs". The production skills are very complicated and delicate. From the six procedures of selecting hair to engraving, and more than 80 processes such as washing, dipping, plucking, combing, and connecting, each process has a process standard, especially the water basin process. Among them, the production techniques of calligraphy and painting brushes are divided into "waist-strengthening method", "top-aligning method" and "tail-front method". It is unique in the pen-making industry. Xu Diquan's products and skills are in the same vein as Zhou Huchen's brush making, and have a certain influence in China. In Pukou area, Xu Diquan tailored a large number of brushes for celebrities in the calligraphy and painting circles such as Wei Tianchi, Yu Jigao, Fan Yang, Zhou Jingxin, Guan Jun, etc. according to the characteristics of calligraphy and painting, and was highly praised by the industry and celebrities in the calligraphy and painting circles. Xu Diquan's brush making not only has certain practical value, commemorative and collection value, but also shows the cultural value of national handicrafts. Its production process should be included in the intangible cultural heritage in our area, and has the value of inheritance and protection. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
