🎧  Listen to Introduction

Hu Bi is the best among brushes, and is famous at home and abroad for its fine workmanship and excellent quality. The birthplace of Hu Bi is Shanlian Town, Nanxun District, Huzhou City. Shanlian's pen-making industry began in the Jin Dynasty. According to the Huzhou Prefecture Chronicle of the Tongzhi Period of the Qing Dynasty, "(Shanlian) is also known as Shanlian, and the residents make the most exquisite pens. Since Monk Zhiyong (a man of the Sui Dynasty, named Wang Faji, the seventh-generation grandson of Wang Xizhi) built an abbey and traveled to Yongxin Temple on Lianxi River, the pen craftsmen have gathered here." After the development of the Tang and Song Dynasties, the Hu Bi craftsmanship has made great progress. In the Yuan Dynasty, Hu Bi became famous and established its position as the best brush. Hu Bi, Hui ink, Duan inkstone, and Xuan paper are called the "Four Treasures of the Study". Hu Bi is purely handmade, and the process consists of more than 120 processes such as material selection, water basin, head knotting, sleeve installation, cattail mat, inlaying, pen selection, and engraving. The main processes are performed by skilled workers, with fine material selection and fine craftsmanship, especially paying attention to the sharpness. The craftsmen who make Hu brushes adhere to the principle of "fine, pure and beautiful" to produce finished Hu brushes with the four virtues of "pointed, neat, round and strong". The exquisite craftsmanship of Hu brushes is an important part of the Hu brush culture with distinct regional characteristics. However, the transformation of social culture, the innovation of writing tools, and the one-sided pursuit of economic interests have led to the proliferation of inferior products in Hu brush production, the loss of craftsmen, and the lack of inheritance. The traditional Hu brush skills have been greatly impacted, and active measures should be taken to protect them. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
