Tongshan Hou's Brush Making Craftsmanship is a traditional skill project in the third batch of representative projects of Xuzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. In the late Qing Dynasty, Hou Chengwen, the founder of Hou's brush making, loved calligraphy since childhood. Later, he learned brush making skills from brush makers. After his continuous efforts to transform and innovate, he gradually formed the prototype of Tongshan Hou's brush making craftsmanship. Hou's brushes are made by hand, inheriting the unique skills of their ancestors. The brushes they make are of excellent skills and exquisite craftsmanship to ensure the quality of each brush. The Tongshan Hou's brush making process mainly includes: design, material selection, ingredients, plucking, degreasing, water basin, knotting, sleeve installation, brush selection, engraving, etc. Tongshan Hou's brushes are mainly divided into three categories: the first category, pure sheep hair type, soft and strong performance. It has the quality characteristics of pure hair and long hair, like holding a smooth jade; the second category, pure wolf hair type, strong and tough performance. It has the quality characteristics of hair like a cone and sharp hair like the moon; the third category, mixed hair type, soft and hard hair are matched with each other, hard and soft. Each has its own characteristics, and chicken hair and rabbit hair are more powerful. Tongshan Hou's brush making process is based on traditional craftsmanship. It constantly tests, improves and innovates technology to improve quality, and adopts heating degreasing technology instead of soaking in lime water. The brushes made have the characteristics of "sharp, round, neat and strong", no split when used, soft and hard, strong ink absorption, smooth writing, easy to gather and spread, free turning of the peak, no bias, wear resistance, long service life, comfortable pen grip, beautiful pen shape, and high use and collection value. Its unique use characteristics and artistic appreciation characteristics have become a precious collection of calligraphy and painting enthusiasts. Xuzhou calligraphers and painters Li Keran, Yu Jigao, Xu Peichen, He Cheng and other calligraphers and painters have used Hou's brushes and gave them high praise.
