🎧  Listen to Introduction

Shigu folk suona art has a long history and many unique local characteristics. It is known as the "hometown of suona". Its suona inheritors are better than the previous generation. Chen Qingfeng from Anle Village, Shigu Town is an elite figure in Shigu suona. In 1956, Chen Qingfeng, Zhu Meijiang, Wang Yuchi, Zuo Yuanhe, and Yuan Biqi composed the music "Crying in Confusion" and premiered it successfully at the Xiangtan County Rural Mass Art Observation and Performance, winning the first prize. At the end of the same year, they participated in the Hunan Province Rural Mass Art Observation and Performance as a representative team of Xiangtan area, and the program "Crying in Confusion" won another award. Subsequently, the provincial performance leadership group included Chen Qingfeng, Zhu Meijiang and Zuo Yuanhe as members of the Hunan Provincial Delegation. In 1957, they took the song "Crying in Confusion" to Beijing to participate in the Second National Folk Music and Dance Festival. "Crying in Confusion" was rated as an excellent program and represented the whole country in the Huairen Hall of Zhongnanhai for a report performance. At that time, leaders of the Party and the State such as 1, 1, Soong Ching Ling, 1 and others came to watch in person. In this way, the sound of suona played by the proud children of Shigu and with profound attainments resounded over Zhongnanhai for the first time, writing a glorious page in the history of the development of Shigu and even Xiangtan's cultural undertakings. The suona culture of Shigu has been enduring and has been passed down. After the 1970s, outstanding successors Zuo Jinyu and Mo Bohuai went to Beijing for performances twice respectively and were received by leaders such as 1, Qu Wu and others. In recent years, the Shigu Suona skill has made great progress. The performance team often wins awards in suona competitions organized by provinces, cities and counties. In the first Suona Art Competition of Xiangtan City in February 2003, "Chang Yinzi" and "Ku Mengdong" won first prizes again; in the 7th China Folk Art Shanhua Award, Folk Art Performance Award and the first national folk blowing song exhibition held in July 2006, Mo Bohuai, deputy director of the Xiangtan County Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and the third-generation outstanding inheritor of China's southern suona, led the Shigu folk suona artist team to participate in the performance as the only representative of our province. The collective ensemble "Ku Mengdong" and the individual solo "Shuangdian Drum" amazed the audience and won the long-lasting applause of the leaders present, the participating teams from all over the country and more than 70,000 spectators, and received high praise from the leaders of the organizing committee and the expert review group, and won the honor of "Excellent Performance Award (the highest award)" for the National Folk Art Performance. This is the second time that the folk suona art of Shigu Town, Xiangtan County, has won a national award, following the performances of Zuo Yuan and Zhu Meijiang for the party and state leaders in Zhongnanhai 50 years ago and the National Achievement Award for Native Art Performances won by Comrade Mo Bohuai last year. In addition, Zuo Tianlu, a young and middle-aged performer from Shigu Town, won the third prize for individual performance of folk songs for his excellent performance of suona music with his nostrils. In May 2006, the folk suona art of Qingshanqiao, with Shigu suona as its core, was included in the provincial intangible cultural heritage protection list, which provides a strong guarantee for the excavation and protection of the only folk intangible cultural heritage in Shigu Town - suona art. Since then, the development of Shigu suona art will usher in a new spring under the great attention of party committees and governments at all levels.
