🎧  Listen to Introduction

Zhangjiajie Tujia Yang Opera is mainly spread in Zhangjiajie City and surrounding areas. Zhangjiajie City is a prefecture-level city in Hunan Province. It is located in the hinterland of Wuling Mountains in northwest Hunan and the middle and upper reaches of Lishui River. It covers an area of 9,563 square kilometers and has a population of more than 1.6 million, of which the Tujia ethnic minority accounts for 77% of the total population. Zhangjiajie belongs to the Golden Triangle area where Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, Guizhou and one city meet. The world natural heritage Wulingyuan Scenic Area is located in the city, which has unique tourism resources; aviation, railways, highways and three-dimensional transportation are very convenient. Zhangjiajie used to be the hub of the ancient road of Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou. Since the Western Han Dynasty, immigrants have stationed troops here, and various cultures have coexisted and blended here. For thousands of years, the Wufeng Chusheng on both sides of the Lishui River has flourished and is a magnificent sight. Yang Opera was nurtured by this influence and matured in the middle of the Qing Dynasty. It has a history of more than 300 years. Tujia Yang Opera, a local opera treasure, has now become a rare opera in the province and the country, and a representative work of Zhangjiajie's national culture. Zhangjiajie Yang Opera, with its singing characteristics of "golden thread hanging gourd", was once very glorious in the border areas of Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou. Zhangjiajie City, the core of the birthplace of Zhangjiajie Tujia Yang Opera, once had more than 30 professional and amateur Yang Opera troupes, and the venues were full and full wherever they went. Therefore, Yang Opera has become a bond of national identity, the essence of Tujia traditional culture, and a boutique of tourism culture. It has academic value in anthropology, ethnology, folklore, history, sociology, and art. However, like many traditional ethnic arts, Zhangjiajie Yang Opera is facing the danger of extinction. For example, the excellent repertoires and beautiful singing of some famous Yang Opera artists such as Ding Zuxue, who is known as the "Xiangxi Mei Lanfang", are on the verge of being lost, and the inheritance of performing arts is lacking. Its endangered status is very serious. The rescue and protection of ethnic folk art is a long way to go. Zhangjiajie's cultural departments and cultural circles will do their utmost to inherit and protect Zhangjiajie Yang Opera, so that this Tujia art wonder will bloom and last forever.
