🎧  Listen to Introduction

Enshi "Hua Luo Gu" is a very popular and prominent wind and percussion music in Enshi City, which is different from other forms of folk wind and percussion music. Enshi "Hua Luo Gu" consists of drums, gongs, cymbals, small gongs (also called hook gongs) and suona. The drum is a single-sided drum, which the locals call a basin drum. This kind of drum has a drum skin on only one side and the other side is hollow. The sound is bright and crisp when struck. The diameter of the drum surface is less than 20 cm. There are many ways to play "Hua Luo Gu". When playing, the drum must occupy a prominent position and the drummer must be a skilled person. Enshi City's "Hua Luo Gu" has its own unique playing method in the four major townships and urban areas. The most famous one is the "one hammer and four sounds" in Beixiang. Without the help of high-tech digital means, it is difficult to observe with the naked eye how the four hammer sounds are played. There are only a handful of folk artists who can master this extraordinary skill. The "Hua Luo Gu" blowing and beating bands, which are freely formed by villagers in their spare time, are active in villages and towns in Enshi City all year round, serving various social occasions, weddings, festivals and even various customs and etiquette occasions. In addition, some people in each village learn from masters and pass on their skills to make a living. This form of inheritance is gradually declining. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
