Enshi "Grass-pulling Gongs and Drums"
"Haocao Gonggu", also known as "Haocao Song", is a common name for field songs in Enshi folk songs. It is an art form of the Tujia people that accompanies labor production, combines folk songs with percussion instruments. Historically, the Tujia area is mountainous and sparsely populated, and single households lack labor. In addition, wild beasts roam around, destroying crops and harming people and animals. Under such specific natural conditions and working environment, the Tujia people have formed a tradition of exchanging labor, forming groups, and cooperating in production, accompanied by the beating of gongs and drums, which can not only serve as labor information and eliminate labor fatigue, but also have the effect of scaring wild beasts. Over time, a unique "Haocao Gonggu" has been formed. In terms of singing style, two singing masters lead or sing in duet, and the rest of the people sing along, accompanied by drums, gongs, or drums, gongs, cymbals, and small gongs. Enshi's "Gaocao Gonggu" is a joint singing structure with rich singing styles and many changes in tunes. For example, the "Jiaoge Gonggu" popular in Dongxiang, Enshi can be divided into seven tunes: Yinqiang, Yangge, Jiaoge, Jieluoye, Paige, Chongtianpao, and Weisheng. Among them, Paige is orthodox, with a relatively gentle tone, belonging to Pingqiang folk songs, and Yangge belongs to Gaoqiang folk songs, requiring the singer to have a loud and high voice. The lyrics are generally fixed. Sometimes the singing masters, according to the rhythm of labor, have tension and relaxation, and compose lyrics based on the scene, singing some songs that are either funny, humorous, or scheming. "A team of people carrying hoes turn around the hillside, with cold rice and cold pulp trees over a thousand. Flowers bloom all over the mountain and birds call, and gongs and drums sing folk songs everywhere." This is the endless praise of the "Haocao Gonggu" by the Qing Dynasty poet Rao Xiguang, which shows the artistic charm of the "Haocao Gonggu". Today, the "Haocao Gonggu" is still loved by people, accompanying labor and happiness. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
