Hunan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Sangzhi weeding gong and drum is a form of folk music during the production labor. It is recorded in the <<Sangzhi County Chronicle>> in the 12th year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty that "the natives used slashes and fire to cultivate the land, dig the ground and weed, beat gongs and drums, and sang songs for entertainment. Nowadays, in the Sangzhi weeding gong and drum songs, the singing of the singers has evolved from simple prayers to drive away disasters to beating gongs and drums, which encourages people to move forward, livens up the labor atmosphere, and achieves the purpose of eliminating fatigue and improving labor efficiency. As a typical national singing art of the Tujia people, the vocal characteristics, performance content, performance form, and cultural connotation of the Sangzhi weeding gong and drum songs are all inextricably linked to the Sangzhi Tujia culture and folk customs. It has profound historical and artistic value. Written by: Hou Biyun
