Jianshi Nanxiang Gongs and Drums
The gongs and drums of Jianshi Nanxiang originated from Gangou Village, Gaoping Town, Jianshi County, and are widely spread in Gaoping, Sanli, Longping, Hongyan, Huaping and other towns in Jianshi County, as well as Lucongpo and Dazhiping in Badong County. It is a combination of local gongs and drums and foreign opera art, and consists of "dry brand", "walking tune", "sitang tune", "silk string" and "surrounding drum". The instruments include drums, big gongs, cymbals, hook gongs, horse gongs, suona, touch bells, Jinghu, cloth whistles, etc. The performers depend on the venue, generally 8 to 12 people. The formation and development of Jianshi Nanxiang gongs and drums has gone through stages from yangko gongs and drums to single cymbals and single blowing, from single cymbals and single blowing to double cymbals and double blowing, and the improvement of double cymbals and double blowing. The "dry brand" part represents different brands due to the different gestures of the performers; the "walking tune" is mainly played during the march, and its melody is simple and bright. The "sitting tune" has a long tune and is suitable for playing in the hall. According to the needs of the performance environment, it is divided into different functions such as weddings and funerals. For example, "Cold Dew Frost" and "Frosty Day Nine" used in funerals are sad and tearful. However, "Zhuangyuanhong" and "Bangzhuangtai" played in weddings are cheerful and bright, pleasing the body and mind. The "silk string" part evolved from the southern opera, which consists of the south road, the north road and the upper road. The addition of instruments such as huqin and bells has injected new vitality into the gong and drum culture. The "surrounding drum" part is the essence and difficulty of Nanxiang gong and drum, which is mainly composed of opera. The repertoire includes "Yuanmen Execution of Son", "Liu Lang Zhengdong", "Silang Visits His Mother" and "Yellow River Ferry". In terms of style, the rhythm of Jianshi Nanxiang gong and drum is relatively fixed, which is 2/4 beats and about 80 beats per minute. The performers hold various musical instruments, and the performance process is not fast or slow, showing a quiet, peaceful, optimistic and natural demeanor. Jianshi Nanxiang Gonggu has a rich repertoire and a wide range of applications. There are different playing tunes and performance forms in rural weddings and funerals and other folk activities. Nanxiang Gonggu's various tunes can be connected at will, with various changes. In June 2011, Jianshi Nanxiang Gonggu was selected into the third batch of Hubei Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
