Henan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Huaibang is an ancient and rare local opera in Henan Province. It originated in the old Huaiqing Prefecture (now Qinyang), so it is named Huaibang. It is commonly known as Huaiqing Bangzi, Lao Huaibang, Xiaobang (ban) Opera, and Huaidiao. It is mainly popular in Qinyang, Bo'ai, Jiyuan, Mengzhou, Wenxian, Wuzhi, Xiuwu, Yuanyang, Huojia, Jiaozuo, and Xinxiang in Henan. Its predecessor was the Sea God Opera, which evolved from table-side singing and praying for rain. It was formed during the Hongwu and Yongle years of the Ming Dynasty. Most of the residents of the original Hanoi County moved here from the 1 area, so the Sea God Opera maintains the performance form of Shanxi drama, combined with the local customs and dialects of Hanoi, and gradually formed a vocal opera that is close to Shanxi Zhonglu Bangzi and has the characteristics of Huaiqing Prefecture. The repertoire, singing, recitation, music, etc. are all full of local colors. Huaibang has more than 300 traditional operas, and the repertoires that are often performed are mostly twins, double female roles, and double painted faces. Representative repertoires include "Rebellion against Xijing", "Ancient Sophora Case", "Zhang Chun Drunk", "Old and Young Exchange", "Red Pearl Girl", "Driving Qin San", "Beheading the Son at the Gate", "Nine Heads Case", "Peach Blossom Temple", "Feng Yi Pavilion", "Old Zhengdong", "Five Women Paying Homage to Their Parents", etc. Most of these traditional repertoires have no scripts, and are all passed down by oral instruction from old artists. Whether in music or performing arts, Huaibang has its own unique style. It belongs to the Banqiang style, and the rhythm must be beaten with a jujube wood bang when singing. The lyrics are mostly seven-character sentences, ten-character sentences, and long and short sentences, which correspond to each other, rhyme, and have a basically regular structure. Huaibang pronounces words in dialect, and the singing is impassioned. According to the needs of the plot, the "back voice" sound of the high octave often appears. There are five main types of ban styles: slow ban, 28 ban, flowing ban, three ban, and non-ban. Accompaniment instruments include big strings, banhu, yueqin, drum boards, and big gongs. Huaibang has complete roles of Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, and Chou. The performances are rough and unrestrained. They are good at performing civil and military dramas with pythons and frames. Due to the unique artistic form of Huaibang, strengthening the excavation, rescue, and protection of Huaibang drama will play an important role in promoting national culture, strengthening the research on the system of Bangzi vocal drama in my country, and enriching and improving the history of Chinese drama. However, under the current situation, the social foundation on which Huaibang relies for survival and development has changed, and there have been serious phenomena such as a sluggish performance market and actor job-hopping. The entire drama is facing a situation of a lack of successors and a lack of successors. Measures need to be taken as soon as possible to rescue and protect it.
