Funing County, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, is located in the southeast of Yunnan Province, bordering Vietnam to the south. It has a population of 390,000, of which 54% are Zhuang. Funing Zhuang Opera has a long history and is one of the only two places in China where Zhuang Opera breeds. It first appeared in the Zhening area of Funing Boai and originated from Zhuang folk songs. The original form of Zhuang Opera was "singing" (reciting songs), which gradually evolved into "bench opera" (several singers sitting and singing), and later evolved into multi-act opera. Funing Zhuang Opera has four major vocal styles, namely "Aiya", "Aiyinong", "Guaihailie" and "Yihehai", also known as the four major schools. The accompanying instruments include horse bone hu, banhu, gourd hu, bamboo flute without membrane, etc. The script uses Chinese characters to record Zhuang language, and most of them are narrative poems in five-character style. The content of the repertoire is based on historical legends of the ethnic group, Han Chinese epic novels, Han Chinese singing scripts and local folk stories. Since the founding of New China, Funing Zhuang Opera has played a pivotal role in the development of Zhuang Opera in Yunnan. In 1954, Funing County established its first opera troupe. In 1958, Funing County held its first Zhuang opera performance, with more than 100 actors. In 1959, the number of Zhuang opera troupes in the county grew to more than 150, with more than 8,000 actors. In 1960, the Funing County Zhuang Opera Troupe was established, and in 1961 it was changed to the Wenshan Prefecture Zhuang Opera Troupe. In 1962, it participated in the Yunnan Provincial National Opera Observation Conference, and its self-written play "Snail Girl" was selected into the "Selected Chinese Minority Operas". During the "Cultural Revolution", Zhuang opera was impacted and stagnated, but it was gradually restored. From 1992 to 2005, Funing County held many farmers' art performances, and more than 80 new and restored opera troupes were added in the county. The long-term opera troupes and a large number of Zhuang opera artists supported the development of Zhuang opera, making it the most representative and influential opera in the local area.
