Commonly known as big drama or local drama. It evolved from Kunqu Opera and Western Qinqiang Opera. It was introduced to Jianning from Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province in the late Ming Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, Jianning had five drama clubs with the same teacher, ancestor and tune, which were spread all over the market towns of Jianning. Yihuang Opera is mainly famous for "The Jade Hairpin" and "Pearl Tower" which are sung to the end with two changes and one tune, followed by more than 20 traditional authentic dramas such as "Dragon and Phoenix Pair", "The Second Plum Blossom", and "Xia Nan Tang". Yihuang Opera tunes are mostly sung in the upper line (two changes or two reeds) and the dismantling of the sub-play (commonly known as miscellaneous plays) is more than the original. The tune is called Xiajiang Shangxian (two changes); the other is called Xiaxian (Xipi). The actors sing in the local voice, with a small voice for the young female role and a half-small voice for the young male role, and the dialogue is half official and half local. The professions are relatively neat, with four female roles, four male roles and four painted faces, and fixed facial makeup. There are six people playing drums, cymbals and instrumental accompaniment. The band practiced the gongche notation, using flutes to tune the notes, in the lower octave, and each person played his own tune. The amateur Yihuang Opera Troupe of Longtou Village, Junkou Town, has been touring remote villages in Jianning, Taining, Ninghua, Qingliu, Mingxi and other counties every Spring Festival and during the slack season. The troupe has a strong local flavor in its singing and performing arts, and its costumes and makeup, as well as props, are primitive and simple. It has retained many characteristics of the operas during the Ming and Qing dynasties and is very popular among the people.
