Zhewan is a natural village in Sijie Town, Tonghai County, Yuxi City, with a total of 1,199 households and 4,191 people. Zhewan Village is a beautiful village with outstanding people and has produced many literati and scholars throughout the ages. It has an excellent tradition of advocating calligraphy and painting, liking collection, and emphasizing both farming and reading. Bu Wenxing was the first in the Wuwu military examination in the third year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1798). He was also good at calligraphy, and was good at regular and cursive scripts. He was famous in Yunnan for a time; Li Jiazheng was particularly good at calligraphy, and his characters were dignified and rigorous; Li Duo had a deep attainment in calligraphy, and his regular script was vigorous and upright, and his cursive script was vigorous and phoenix-like, and was famous inside and outside the county. Li Shaozhou wrote plaques and couplets at the age of 13 and was hailed as a "child prodigy"; Li Dong, Yang Jing, and Gao Ping were also famous for their calligraphy. Due to the large number of literati and scholars, Zhewan was known as the "Bishan Mozhuang" during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. From the Republic of China to the founding of New China, a group of literati and scholars such as Gao Tai, Yang Hongfa, Bu Zenghua, and Gao Zhanwei appeared. In order to carry forward the tradition of "Bishan Mozhuang" and enliven rural cultural life, in 1994, Zhewan held the first ancient and modern calligraphy and painting exhibition in the village, exhibiting 145 works and more than 1,000 visitors, which attracted the attention of relevant county and city departments. During the Lantern Festival in 2003, the "First Village-level Farmers' Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition of Zhewan Village, Tonghai County" was exhibited at the Tonghai County Cultural Center, and in July of the same year, it was invited to be exhibited at the Yuxi Youth Palace. Among them, Yang Bingshun's calligraphy works were included in the "China International Literature and Art Expo", and Li Shuanghua's calligraphy works won the 1999 Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Artist Century Award. The works of Yang Bingshun, Li Shuanghua, Huang Chengyan, Yang Zhengfu and others were collected by the local cultural department. The village committee collected 122 calligraphy and painting works by 38 people and published the "Zhewan Calligraphy Collection", which set a precedent for village-level organizations to publish calligraphy and painting collections. In 2004, Zhewan established the "Bishan Mozhuang" calligraphy and painting association with 44 members. Usually, it focuses on self-study, with regular concentrated activities for one day every two months, and 1-2 exhibitions of works every year. The association also cooperates with Zhewan Primary School to hold a calligraphy and art competition every year, and the association awards and commends on Children's Day. The villagers of Zhewan Village love calligraphy and painting. Nearly one-third of the families have calligraphy and paintings hanging at home, and the Spring Festival couplets of every household are written by the villagers themselves. In recent years, due to the popularity of computers, many people no longer like to write with pens, and the number of people learning calligraphy and art has gradually decreased. At present, Zhewan Village has formulated practical protection measures and plans, which are specifically organized and implemented by the village committee and the elderly association, and more calligraphy and painting enthusiasts are cultivated through exhibitions, pen meetings, lectures, etc.
