The incense dragon of Zhongzhai in Quannan (the third batch at the provincial level) is said to be able to exorcise evil spirits, avoid disasters, exorcise demons, and pray for good weather and good harvests in the coming year. For many years, the Chen family of Zhongzhai has never abandoned this ancient folk art. Every year on the first day of the Chinese New Year, they dance the dragon for three consecutive nights according to local customs. The incense dragon of Zhongzhai is exquisitely crafted, with compact and coordinated proportions, rigorous dragon insertion procedures, and accurate shapes. The dragon dance is well-trained, in step, and vivid. The rhythm of percussion instruments is sometimes low and gentle, walking slowly, and naive; sometimes high and vigorous, overwhelming, tiger roaring and dragon roaring like a dragon entering the sea! At most, nine dragons appeared in Zhongzhai Natural Village at the same time in one night. Because the dragons were competitive, the dragon dancers danced hard and the gong beaters beat hard, so a local proverb was left: breaking the gong is the majority! The old and young women and children followed closely behind the dragon dancing through the streets and alleys. Firecrackers were set off at the door of each household, and the dragon head nodded to show gratitude. If there was a spacious flat land or grain drying ground, there would be a full set of demonstrations. When the dragon dance was over that night, the onlookers would rush to grab the remaining incense on the dragon. It is said that taking it home and sticking it on the top of the chicken shed can prevent chicken plague.
