Baishun Baizhupian Village is located in the northwest of Nanxiong City, more than 700 meters above sea level. It has towering mountains, bamboos like the sea, beautiful scenery and simple folk customs. The incense dragon dance originated in this beautiful village. The village has a history of more than 300 years of incense dragon dance, which has been spread in the Baishun Town area. After historical development and evolution, it has formed a unique set of folk dragon dance art characteristics that have been passed down to this day. During the Lantern Festival or other major celebrations every year, the incense dragon in the village will be grandly staged and fly and dance. The skills of dragon making and dragon dancing are ancient and handed down. Today, the young and middle-aged people in the village can operate them skillfully. Therefore, the village is known as the "Fire Dragon" Village in the township. Before the performance, the dragon made of straw is full of burning incense, and the incense is used to decorate the dragon body, and the dragon head is cleverly constructed to highlight the dragon head. During the performance, the dragon body, covered in golden light, danced wildly in the night, sometimes up and sometimes down, flying and tumbling, with smooth movements, realistic shapes, and extremely fast. The scene was very spectacular and warm. At 0:00, the fire dragon danced, the stars twinkled, and the lights were colorful, just like colorful streamers flying into the sky and the Milky Way pouring down, which was breathtaking. The Lantern Festival every year is a festive day for the incense dragon to "raise its head", which is called "Noisy Spring" by the locals. After nightfall, on the open threshing ground, 18 farmers burned and inserted incense at the same time in a tense and orderly manner. In about 15 minutes, 1,600 to 1,800 incense sticks were inserted into the two dragons. The incense dragon is divided into "male dragon" and "female dragon". It is made of straw. The male dragon is 9.9 meters long and the female dragon is slightly shorter, about 9 meters. Each dragon weighs about 29 kilograms. After the incense is inserted, the dragon body is like starlight, and the incense is lingering, making the fire dragon seem to have aura and life. At this time, accompanied by the sound of gongs and drums, firecrackers and people's laughter, an old man stood in the center of the venue and danced with the dragon ball (fireball) to lure the two dragons to enter. Two rows of dragon dancers held the fire dragons in both hands and stepped on the "dragon and shrimp" steps according to the directions, and slowly appeared on the stage. The dragon dance routines include "Double Dragons Playing with Pearls", "Jumping over the Dragon Gate", "Double Dragons Going Out to Sea", "Traveling Around the World", etc. In the performance field, the flying and dancing dragons are extremely flexible. In the night, only incense can be seen but no people, which is spectacular. The incense dragon of Baizhupian Village, Baishun, is unique to Nanxiong. Over the years, it has participated in the folk activities and performances of Nanxiong City, the "Dragon and Phoenix Auspiciousness, Singing and Dancing" Folk Art Festival of Shaoguan City and the Third Joy Festival of Guangdong Province. It won the silver medal when participating in the performance of the Guangdong International Tourism and Culture Festival and received widespread praise. The incense dragon has infected and conquered countless audiences with its unique artistic charm, allowing people to get beauty and enjoyment in the process of appreciation. The incense dragon performance is cheerful, warm, healthy and uplifting. It is a traditional reserved program of folk art performances in Nanxiong over the years. It is a rare folk performing art in northern Guangdong and even Lingnan.
