Dai brocade weaving technique

Yunnan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Dai brocade is the product of the labor of the ancestors of the Dai people and is the earliest important variety of Dai traditional handicrafts. Dai brocade is closely related to the daily life of the Dai people, Buddhist beliefs, ghost and god worship, etc. It occupies a very important position in the social life of the Dai people and has unique historical, cultural and aesthetic values. Dai brocade comes from the hands of women, reflecting the agricultural social customs of the Dai area where men farm and women weave. In their spare time, Dai women weave noble lotus, upright betel nuts, auspicious peacocks, solemn elephants, majestic unicorns, dragons and phoenixes, pagodas and other patterns on the brocade, expressing the Dai people's pursuit and yearning for truth, goodness and beauty. Dai brocade often uses a white background to set off a single independent pattern or a repeated continuous pattern. Some patterns are presented in silhouette-style side shapes, with vivid images and clear outlines, giving people a deep impression. In addition, Dai brocade also emphasizes the symmetry, contrast and continuity of patterns, and pays attention to the combination of density, concrete and abstract. Dai brocade is both implicit and clear, with rich imagination, ingenious conception and unique technique. It occupies an important place in my country's brocade art. However, due to poor support and protection, Dai brocade skills are now facing extinction. Scientific and reasonable protection and development of Dai brocade is of great significance to the promotion of the excellent culture of the Dai people. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
