Kaili Miao Brocade Weaving Technique
Kaili City, Guizhou Province is the county-level administrative region with the largest number of Miao people in China. In addition to urban streets, there are natural villages where Miao people live everywhere. Before the 1990s, brocade weaving was popular in these rural Miao villages. Kaili Miao brocade used to use hemp and silk, but now uses cotton and silk. There are also mixed weavings of cotton and silk, and silk brocade is the best. The most exquisite silk brocade is the back strap fine silk brocade of Zhouxi "Middle Skirt Miao". The fine silk used is 60 warps and 90 wefts per square centimeter. It feels soft and smooth, and the patterns are bright and exquisite. Kaili Miao brocade has rich patterns, including animal patterns, plant patterns, celestial patterns, utensil patterns, geometric patterns, etc. Animal and plant patterns are mostly taken from nature, and after abstraction, simplification and deformation, they appear very exaggerated, vivid and lifelike; or the distinctive parts of the animals, such as the head, horns, feet, claws, eyes, and hair, are used to symbolize the animals themselves, which is ingenious. In particular, the frequent and reasonable use of diamond patterns makes the composition rigorous, regular, full and symmetrical. Coupled with the delicate workmanship and exquisite craftsmanship, the patterns are more concise, bright, unified and harmonious, beautiful and generous, with high aesthetic value and excellent decorative effect. At present, the traditional brocade weaving skills of the Kaili Miao people are facing the crisis of no successors. The main reason is that young women are either busy studying for exams or working outside to earn money. Their concepts have changed and they are unwilling to learn the complicated, time-consuming and less beneficial brocade weaving. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
