Ivory carving (Yangzhou ivory carving), the current carving material is mammoth ivory. Yangzhou ivory carving is a skill that uses a knife as the main tool and shallow carving and micro carving techniques to engrave calligraphy and painting on ivory. Yangzhou ivory carving first appeared during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. At first, it was deep and had little influence. It was not until the Xianfeng and Tongzhi periods that the famous Yangzhou painter Wu Xizai introduced shallow carving techniques into ivory carving, and it began to shine, creating the art of shallow ivory carving in my country. During the Guangxu period, Yangzhou Yu Xiaoxuan developed the shallow carving art of his predecessors and created micro carving techniques. He could carve thousands of words on a square inch of ivory plate, and could carve thirty or forty lines on a three-tenths of ivory fan bone. The handwriting was as fine as a mosquito's foot, and could only be seen with a magnifying glass dozens of times. Huang Hanhou, the inheritor of ivory carving, specialized in the calligraphy of various schools since the Jin and Tang Dynasties, and was able to grasp the essence of each, creating the shallow carving and miniature copying technique of Yangzhou. Chen Suping, a modern shallow carving inheritor, micro-carved 550,000 words of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" on ivory, which took more than 5 years to complete. This work has set a Guinness World Record. Yangzhou ivory carving works are small but great, and the knife marks reproduce the interest of brush and ink, and the charm is beyond the square inch. Ivory carving artists write and paint on ivory, dotting and rubbing horizontally and vertically, rubbing and rubbing, drying and dyeing, wet and dry, fat and thin, and the intention follows the knife. It is done in one step and the ink is put down. Not only is the skill shown in the subtle details, but more importantly, the brushwork is well-organized. The places where the knife goes have thickness and thinness, yin and yang, and the direction and back are all full of body and momentum. Because the micro-carved ivory characters are very small, the rotation of the knife tip cannot be seen in every stroke. The artist often relies on wrist strength to control it, and eyesight is secondary. When carving, hold your breath and calm down, and complete it in one go. With their solid calligraphy and painting skills, they use iron pens to reproduce the charm of calligraphy and painting ink, which is full of charm and can be called wonderful. Many highly skilled artists have emerged in Yangzhou ivory carving art, with different styles and strengths. Some of their works have won awards at the Panama International Competition, and many of their works have been collected by museums. Ivory carving works use rare materials, a wide range of themes, and are meticulously carved and exquisite, forming a unique artistic style.
