Maonan Pumpkin Festival
The "Pumpkin Festival" of the Maonan people is held on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, which is the Double Ninth Festival. Each family puts the large orange pumpkins of different shapes on the floor and selects them one by one. Young people go door to door to select the "Pumpkin King". Not only the appearance is considered, but also the seeds must be seen through the surface. When everyone's opinions are basically unanimous, a strong person will split the "Pumpkin King" with a machete, and the owner will take out the pumpkin gourd and save the plump seeds as seeds for the next year. Then cut the pumpkin into pieces and put them into the millet porridge pot. Simmer over low heat until it is cooked. First, put a bowl of it in front of the incense hall to worship the "Pumpkin King", and then everyone will eat together. Many ethnic groups in China regard the Double Ninth Festival as the Elderly Day and have the traditional custom of respecting the elderly. The Maonan people are no exception, but the customs are different. For the elderly who are over 60 years old and weak and sick, the Maonan people usually "add food to supplement their longevity" during the Double Ninth Festival. On this day, children prepare several tables of banquets at home and invite relatives and friends to come. Guests are required to bring several kilograms of fine rice or fresh fruits. The "hundred-family rice" sent by relatives and friends should be stored separately. In the future, when cooking for the elderly, some of it can be mixed with their own rice. After the "hundred-family rice" is eaten, if the elderly have not recovered, they have to continue to choose a day to hold the "adding food to replenish life" ceremony.
