Maonan Wood Mask Dance
The Maonan Wood Face Dance was originally a Nuo dance. It was developed on the basis of folk sacrificial music and dance. It aims to worship, entertain gods and people, and fully embodies the charm of Nuo dance. Its content consists of two parts: one is to pray to gods for good weather, good harvest, disaster relief, and blessing the health of people and animals, such as the formulaic dances and needle threading dances of gods such as Po Wang, Sanjie, Sanyuan, and She Wang; the other is to express the joyful emotions of fishing and hunting production, farming production, and the love between men and women in production labor, such as the Yao Wang series of dances and the free dance of Sanniang and Du Di, which are all image dances and emotional dances with strong imitation. The most obvious artistic feature of the Wood Face Dance is that it is combined with singers and percussion performances, and appears in the form of a fusion of poetry, music and dance. Although it has a strong religious color, it is based on the concept of praising truth, goodness and beauty. On the whole, the Wood Face Dance is based on "emotion" and uses the shell of religious rituals with a strong mysterious color to express the inner feelings of the Maonan people. The Wood Face Dance excludes those illusory things. Although the dancers wear wooden masks representing various gods, the content of the dance is mainly based on real life. Therefore, the movements of the Wood Face Dance are humorous but not debauched, and they are "joyful but not lewd"; while the dance that reflects the elimination of disasters and difficulties can be "sad but not hurt", reflecting a kind of artistic beauty. The life characteristics of the ethnic groups in the Dashi Mountain area, the expression of joy, anger, sorrow, and joy, the imitation of hunting, fighting, and farming movements, the powerful swings of hands, feet, shoulders, and hips, the rhythm and posture formed by long-term labor and life, constitute this kind of body aesthetic emotion, which is fully reflected in the dance language of the Wood Face Dance. The dance movements that show the plump muscles and strong physique of men have become the symbol of male beauty: while the plumpness, roundness and tension of the chest and buttocks have become the characteristics of female beauty. The dance language of the Wood Face Dance is concise and the rhythm is brisk. Although the face is covered, the dance movements of the hands, feet, waist, etc. fully reveal the inner world of the characters and express the various emotions of the characters' personalities. Thus, a rich flavor of life, rough and elegant, simple and gorgeous artistic style is formed. For example, the purpose of various patterns in the needle threading dance is not only to worship in all directions during worship, but also to change the rigid and monotonous dance routines. Because simple repetition and rigid straight lines make people feel boring, the curves and slants formed by walking in the "8" shape are a kind of curvilinear beauty, which reflects the diligence and bravery of men and the beauty and gentleness of women, and has a high aesthetic value. The performers of the wooden face dance wear dragon robes and python clothes, with feathers on their heads, etc., which are naturally the needs of the plot, but more importantly, they give people a sense of beauty. Costumes and props are symbols of national culture. Through dance, dynamic beauty is added, the expressiveness of dance is enriched and expanded, and the brilliant colors of the long-standing culture of the Maonan people are shown. In 1994, the Huanjiang National Art Troupe performed in Japan, and in 1999, it formed a group to perform in Taiwan. The Maonan wooden mask dance is full of rich life atmosphere and ethnic characteristics. Its unique rhythm, color and rich connotation have attracted many domestic and foreign audiences and won unanimous praise. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
