Zhuang Banquet Festival
In autumn and winter, if you walk on the country road in Dali Township, Xingbin District, Laibin City, Guangxi, you may be invited to a nearby village to visit their home. When you, a guest of unknown origin, are about to leave after having a good meal, the hospitable host will give you a bag of fried glutinous rice buns or a few rice dumplings, and tell you: "Now that you know your home, you must come often!" If you encounter such a strange thing, the host must be a Zhuang, because the Zhuang people here have a unique custom: every year there is a festival dedicated to entertaining relatives, friends and guests, but the date of this festival varies from village to village. During this festival every year, the more guests come to a family, the more respectable that family is; and if a family has fewer guests, it will be regarded as having poor popularity and losing face. Therefore, during this festival, every household not only invites relatives and friends, but also strangers they meet on the road to their home to entertain them. Some families even go to the road near the village to wait for passers-by to come for dinner. The local Zhuang people's festival to entertain relatives and guests is said to be to thank all relatives and friends for their love and care for them, because people in the world always need help from others, and they will always get help from all relatives and friends and many acquaintances or strangers. Therefore, they feel it is necessary to arrange such a festival to thank all parties. In order to entertain guests well during this festival, the host family started preparing several months ago: planting glutinous rice, raising chickens, ducks or pigs and sheep. In the past, everyone was poor, and those who had no money to buy wine and meat would take advantage of the time between farm work to go up the mountain to collect firewood or go out to help, and do everything possible to earn enough money so that they can entertain guests properly on this day. The day before the festival, when the sun was about to set, many guests arrived one after another, and the whole village was crowded with people from every household. Because the number of guests coming to each household was several times more than the population of the host family, the host family could not arrange beds for so many guests to sleep on that night, except for taking care of some older guests. However, the guests also knew this, and they rested well before coming, because they had to stay up all night. After dinner, the hosts were busy killing chickens and ducks, making palm cakes, frying oil buns, making braised pork, etc., and had no time to chat with the guests. However, they would not let the guests be ignored. On this night, the village would either arrange a play, whether it was a colorful opera or a master opera, and the performance would last until dawn; or they would set up a singing stage in a more open place and let the more famous singers in the village or the local area come to sing with the guests. If it was a good year, both a play and a singing competition might be arranged. As soon as the gongs and drums sounded, the audience was quickly packed; and in the singing competition, once the singing stage was set up, it was soon crowded. Of course, the audience watching the opera was always mostly elderly and children, while young people mostly went to sing or listen to songs. In the singing competition, the singers would sometimes stop to listen when they saw others singing well, and the listeners would also sing when they heard the emotional part. Therefore, the singers are the audience, and the audience are also the singers. The singing competition is always men and women. At the beginning, they are divided into two camps of men and women to sing, singing about current affairs, singing about what they have seen, singing about friendship, singing about good people and good deeds in the village, singing about the joys and sorrows in life. As they sang, they somehow split into several groups, and finally split into many pairs of young men and women singing one-on-one, and the content of the singing is mostly to express their love for each other. In order to prevent the singing from interfering with each other, the newly separated pair often left the singing stage while singing. There were more and more couples singing and looking for other places to go. Every time at this time, there were people singing and listening everywhere in the village and outside the village, and the whole village was immersed in the sea of songs. After dawn, the opera ended, but the singing continued. However, the content of the singing returned to "singing about current affairs, singing about what they saw and heard, singing about friendship, singing about the good people and good deeds in the village, singing about the joys and sorrows in life". The parties participating in the singing took turns to eat breakfast without interrupting the singing. At eight or nine o'clock, many guests arrived one after another. Among the new guests, most of the women were cooking with the host family, while most of the men were playing basketball in the village primary school. Of course, some of the new guests came for the songs, so there was a lot of new strength among the singers and the audience. After lunch, the guests left one after another, and the host and the guest said goodbye reluctantly. The annual "Banquet Festival" not only strengthened family ties, deepened friendships, made new friends, but also achieved many love. (No pictures available, please provide them.)
