Shiwan is located in the central area of Chancheng District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province. Shiwan pottery sculpture skills are mainly distributed in the streets of Shiwan Town, Chancheng District and surrounding areas. Rich natural resources, geographical location close to mountains and rivers, and smooth water transportation conditions make Shiwan an important pottery base in Lingnan, my country. Shiwan pottery sculpture skills have the characteristics of humanity, locality, and nationality, and have a unique artistic style in creation. The "Shiwan figurine" pottery sculpture skills can be divided into five categories according to the physical form: figure pottery, animal pottery, utensils, micro-plastics, and tile ridge pottery. The "Shiwan figurine" pottery sculpture skills represented by figure modeling have both form and spirit. It absorbs the essence of various cultures and arts, combines high realism with moderate exaggeration, and has both life interest and artistic taste, forming a distinct local style. Its production process includes six links: conception and creation, clay refining, forming, decoration, glazing, and dragon kiln calcination. The calcination temperature depends entirely on the master's experience. There are three types of fire in the upper, middle and lower parts of the dragon kiln, which are used to move different parts of the fired objects, and can only be mastered by skilled craftsmen. Shiwan pottery sculpture was developed on the basis of daily pottery. Its artistic prototype can be seen from the pottery unearthed from the Eastern Han tombs in Shiwan. The development of Shiwan pottery sculpture can be roughly divided into four periods: the formation and development period from the Tang Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty, the heyday period in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the low period in the Republic of China, and the heyday and innovation period after the founding of the People's Republic of China, especially after the reform and opening up. Among the contemporary Shiwan pottery sculpture masters, Liu Jia, Zhuang Jia, Liu Zemian, Liao Xiongbiao and others are representatives. Shiwan pottery sculpture is facing the dilemma of no successors. The limited market space and the realistic living environment make it difficult for young people to take this skill as a lifelong career. Under this situation, a large number of foreign elements have been injected into Shiwan pottery sculpture, and traditional skills are difficult to preserve and urgently need protection. Shiwan pottery sculpture was selected into the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
