🎧  Listen to Introduction

Badajiao Yangge is a folk dance art that combines speaking, singing and dancing, which is popular in Wuzhai and Shenchi areas of Shanxi Province. It is named because there are eight main characters. Badajiao Yangge has a long history. There are two reasons for its origin in the local area: one is that it originated from the peasant uprising at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, and the other is that it came from the story of the Liangshan heroes who attacked Daming Mansion three times. "The History of Shanxi Dance" once recorded: "Among the Shanxi folk, dances in the Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties include "Zai Gu" and "Badajiao". There are 28 characters in Badajiao Yangge (which can be slightly increased or decreased), mainly including the leading Tartar, the drum, the flower, the wife, the old man, the silly boy, the silly girl, and the wind man; the singing content is rich, the themes include folk songs, pastoral songs, and love songs, and the tunes include Xintianyou, climbing tunes, four sentences, three sentences and a half, jingle, lotus flower, talkative mouth, Suolaibao, quick board, cross talk, etc.; instrumental music Most of the percussion instruments are drums, small gongs, cymbals, hinges, big hairpins, small hairpins, etc. The wind instruments include suona and sheng, and later, there are also wind instruments and string instruments, such as huqin, sanxian, and sihu. The performance forms are generally divided into pressing, kneading, and rounding. There are more than 20 formations, such as four gates and eight buckets, stepping on flowers, three powers, snake coils and nine eggs, and plum blossom cross formations. There are nearly 100 plays, such as "Five Sisters Watching Lanterns", "Ten Lanterns", "Going to the Market", "Picking Vegetables", "Jasmine", "Four Seasons Flowers", and "Burning Red Cliffs". In addition to the mutual condolences between villages during the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival, the eight-corner yangko has another major form of activity, that is, the class performance. At that time, several yangko classes will gather together to exchange experiences and compete in skills, which is called "competition performance" by the people. Wuzhai eight-corner yangko truly reflects the loyal, simple, and persistent personality and folk customs of the local people, and also reflects the ancient farmers and herdsmen's unremitting pursuit of art and their desire for a better life in the future. Protecting and inheriting this folk art has important practical significance for building a harmonious society and promoting social progress. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
