🎧  Listen to Introduction

Historically, Dashilan was not only a prosperous commercial area, but also had relatively concentrated entertainment venues and numerous folk flower fairs. The "Wudouzhai" referred to by Wudouzhai stilts yangko was originally the name of a street in the Dashilan area, now in Shejia Hutong. Because the founder of the flower fair lived in Wudouzhai, it was named Wudouzhai stilts yangko, which is still used today. The Wudouzhai stilts yangko was originally called "Longevity, Free and Kind, Peaceful Singing Yangko Old Meeting", which started during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. When Wudouzhai's stilts yangko was performed for Cixi's 60th birthday, Cixi was very impressed by the performance of the "small head line" in the yangko, and specially gave the "prince's crown" to replace the original "baby's hair". Wudouzhai stilts yangko has since become famous. It lasted until the end of the Qing Dynasty, with artists Bao San, Xiang Liu, and Jiao Wenhan as the heads of the meeting. He has participated in various temple fairs. The area with the most activities in the city is the Jiangnan Chenghuang Temple Fair located at the east entrance of Nanheng Street in Xuanwu District. During the warlords' melee, the flower fair activities were at a low ebb, and gradually prospered after the 20 years of the Republic of China. At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the head of the association, Li Guijin, went to Xinjiang. Before leaving, he sold all his props and clothes, and the flower fair activities were suspended. In the early 1950s, four businesses, including Longhua Engraving Shop, Deshengxuan Teahouse, Shuangshunyong Hemp Knife Shop, and Zhongxin Bicycle Shop, on Yangmeizhuxie Street, Dashilan Street, Xuanwu District, initiated the event and invited Su Baoquan (1923-2004) and Ren Fengrui (1926-1998) to teach yangko skills, inheriting the traditions of the original yangko association, re-purchasing props, and establishing a new association named "Huade Yongxin, Hejie Public Discussion, Taiping Singing Yangko Association". Activities were stopped during the "0" period. After 1978, the yangko association was revived by association leaders Ren Fengrui, Zhang Quanzeng, Wang Jingxian and others, and was named "Xuanwu District Staff Amateur Stilt Team". By the end of the 1980s, the Wudouzhai Laohui was on the verge of extinction in Beijing due to the lack of venues and successors.
