🎧  Listen to Introduction

Two Ghosts Wrestling, also known as Erwa Wrestling and Erxi Wrestling, is a Han folk dance form in which one person carries two ghosts (puppet props) on his back for performance. During the performance, the actor carries the two ghosts wrestling props on his back, and gives the audience the external expression of "two ghosts" wrestling through the comprehensive coordinated movements of the artist's legs, back, arms, etc. Since its birth, the folk dance form of Two Ghosts Wrestling has been active in folk customs such as festivals, celebrations, and rain prayers. By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, the performance reached its most prosperous period. Because the performance requires high physical strength from the artists, most of the performers are men, and women rarely participate. During the performance, there is percussion accompaniment; the performance venue is mainly a square or stage; two characters, one performer, confront, tear, wrestle, and roll; the movements are sometimes soothing and sometimes fierce, vividly reflecting the lively scene of the two ghosts fighting, which makes people laugh. Ergui wrestling requires the performers to have a strong physique, superb skills and strong self-control. The dance can be performed by one person or by a group of people, but one person must be the main performer and the others are supporting performers. During major events such as the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival, Ergui wrestling is the most popular finale program among the local people. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
