The Boxer Rebellion Memorial Hall is located at No. 18, Hejia Hutong, Ruyi'an Street, Hongqiao District, Tianjin. It is a Taoist temple dedicated to Lü Dongbin in the Qing Dynasty. In the 26th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1900 AD), the Boxer Rebellion arose. The famous Boxer leader Cao Futian set up the main altar here, which became the center of the Boxer Rebellion activities at that time. After restoration in 1985, the "Tianjin Boxer Memorial Hall" was established. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit. The Boxer Rebellion is one of the three major revolutions in modern Chinese history. Sun Yat-sen called it a model for the Revolution of 1911, and Premier Zhou Enlai called it "one of the cornerstones of the great victory of the Chinese people fifty years later."

Philosophy related to the heritage

Philosophical interpretation of the Tianjin Boxer Memorial from different perspectives of Eastern and Western philosophy can reveal its deep significance in historical memory and social education. From the perspective of Eastern philosophy, Confucianism emphasizes social responsibility and moral cultivation. The Boxer Movement reflects the spirit of resistance of ordinary people in the face of foreign aggression, and embodies a strong sense of national consciousness and social responsibility. The memorial is not only a commemoration of this period of history, but also an important place to inherit this spirit. It reminds people not to forget the past, inspires contemporary people to inherit the patriotic feelings of their ancestors, and practice social justice and personal morality. The natural law in Taoist thought is also reflected here: the rise and fall of the Boxer Rebellion shows the cyclical nature of the development of things, reminding people to follow the laws of nature and maintain a humble and cautious attitude in the face of change. From the perspective of Western philosophy, according to phenomenological theory, the memorial, as a space carrying collective memory, is jointly constructed by the experience and consciousness of visitors. The unique experience gained by each visitor here gives this place new meaning. The pragmatic view is that the memorial is not only for commemorating history, but also a functional facility that serves society and promotes education. It helps the public understand historical events and their impacts by displaying real objects, pictures, etc., so as to better cope with current challenges. In the framework of existentialism, the memorial prompts individuals to think about the relationship between personal identity and social responsibility. Standing in front of these historical relics, people may reflect on their role in society and how to contribute to social progress. In summary, whether from the perspective of Eastern or Western philosophy, the Tianjin Boxer Memorial is a cultural bridge connecting the past and the present, the material and the spiritual. It is both a commemoration of history and an inspiration for future actions.
