🎧  Listen to Introduction

Dapingdiao, originally named Pingdiao, is a local opera in the Bangzi vocal system of Shandong. It is called Pingdiao because its singing music is lower in pitch than the high-pitched (Shandong Bangzi). Because the bangzi used for beating the festival is particularly large (about 60 cm), it was once called "Dabangxi" in history, and is now generally called Dapingdiao. This opera has a long history. According to written records, it has a history of more than 500 years of development. There are two theories about the origin of Dapingdiao: First, it is said that it evolved from puppet show or shadow play, because the posture and appearance of Dapingdiao performance are similar to those of puppet show. Second, it is said that it evolved from Qinqiang. Over the past hundreds of years, Dapingdiao has gradually developed and has become a trend, mainly relying on the innovation of the three schools of this drama, namely: Hedongping, Dongluping and Xiluping. Chengwu County Dapingdiao belongs to Hedongping, and has produced famous artists such as Niu Yinhe, Niu Yinhai, Shao Bingyu, Niu Guangxuan and Ma Mingluan who have great influence in the opera world. There are more than 180 repertoires of Dapingdiao that are often performed. The singing style of Dapingdiao belongs to the Banqiang style. The lyrics are in the form of upper and lower sentences, and the singing style is in the seven-tone scale Zheng mode. The singing style of Dapingdiao is all based on a pair of symmetrical upper and lower sentences. The basic singing styles include slow, 28-ban, flowing, and three-ban, and there are also several auxiliary styles that are changed from these styles. The musical singing style of Dapingdiao absorbs the essence of other operas. The tune is gentle, pleasant, high-pitched and bright, with different styles. The accompanying dance is unique. It plays an irreplaceable role in the study of ancient folk opera music and has a lasting reference effect on Chinese folk music. Chengwu County Dapingdiao Troupe has been performing all year round and has won many awards in provincial and municipal opera performances. However, due to social changes and the impact of the diversification of the cultural and entertainment industry, the activities of Dapingdiao are shrinking rapidly. Some old artists with unique skills have passed away one after another. There is a gap in young and middle-aged actors. Some are running around for a living, and some have changed their careers. There is a serious loss of talent. The development situation of this type of drama is relatively severe and it is in urgent need of protection and inheritance.
