🎧  Listen to Introduction

Siping tune evolved from "Huagu", an ancient storytelling art popular in the border areas of Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui. For hundreds of years, "Huagu" has entertained the masses in the form of street singing. In 1930, artists brought "Huagu" to the stage in Jinan. During this period, it was called many names, such as "Shandong Ganzabang", "Shandong Laodiao" and "Shandong Laobangzi". In 1943 and 1945, two troupes headed by Zhen Youming and Zou Yuzhen tried to add string accompaniment to "Huagu". On the premise of not losing tradition, based on the flat plate, absorbing the advantages of Henan, Ping and Peking operas, "Hua Ting Hui" and "Chen Sanliang Pa Tang" were used as scripts for trial performances. With bold innovation, Siping tune took shape. Siping tune is famous for its singing skills. The main instrument is Gaohu, which is tuned to A and has 63 strings. The body movements are self-contained, and there are more than 200 plays. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, professional Siping Opera Troupes were established in Chengwu, Caoxian, Shanxian, Juancheng, Fanxian (divided to Henan in 1964) in Shandong, Fengxian, Peixian, Xuzhou in Jiangsu, Dangshan in Anhui, Shangqiu, Changyuan, Qingfeng in Henan, Qiuxian, Daming in Hebei, etc., with more than 30 at most. The scope of activities covers Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, Anhui, Hebei, Shaanxi, Shanxi and other places. A group of outstanding actors have also emerged, such as Zhen Youming, Zou Yuzhen, Wang Hanchen, Wang Guifang, Liu Yuzhi, Zou Aiqin, Li Guirong, Wang Fengyun, Bai Jinrong and other famous actors who enjoy a high reputation among the audience and are deeply loved by the people. All Siping Opera Troupes were abolished during the Cultural Revolution. In 1978, a few troupes in Chengwu, Jinxiang, Shandong, Shangqiu and Changyuan, Henan were restored. At present, only the Chengwu Siping Opera Troupe insists on performing all year round. With the impact of diversified entertainment, its survival is worrying and urgently needs inheritance and protection.
