Da Ping Diao
Dapingdiao, also known as Pingdiao, Dabangxi, and Dayoubang, is mainly popular in northern Henan, southern Hebei, southwestern Shandong, eastern Henan, and northern Anhui. It originated in the middle of the Ming Dynasty and has a history of more than 500 years. The singing music of Dapingdiao belongs to the Bangzi tune system. Because it is lower in pitch than Shandong Bangzi, Henan Bangzi, and Hebei Bangzi, it is called Pingdiao or Dapingdiao. Its musical board structure is mostly the same as that of Henan Opera, but its artistic style is more rough and fiery than that of Henan Opera. Dapingdiao has a great influence in the vast area north of the Yellow River, and gradually formed three branches, namely Donglu Pingdiao, Xilu Pingdiao, and Hedong Pingdiao. During its long-term development, Dapingdiao has accumulated a rich repertoire. According to statistics, there are about 600 plays, but only 200 are preserved now. Its content is mainly drawn from novels such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Water Margin, Romance of Sui and Tang Dynasties, Generals of the Yang Family, and Bao Gong's Case. Most of them are "Robe and Belt Plays" with black and red faces, and there are fewer folk life story plays. Frequently performed plays include Going Down Gaoping, Going Down Yanjing, Going Down Jiangnan, Rebellion against Yanghe, Jinyang Pass, Rebellion against Xuzhou, Recruiting Jiang Wei, Baihua Pavilion, Battle of Luoyang, Qin Xianglian, Beheading the King of Zhao, Zhao Gongming Going Down the Mountain, Golden Whip Story, Zhang Fei Rolling Drum, Three Orders, and Fire Dragon Formation. The singing style of Dapingdiao is basically the same as Shandong Bangzi, but the voice is generally produced with the real voice. However, when the board is started in the slow board, Guaitouding and other board styles, the ending uses a very high falsetto. The main accompaniment instruments are Daxian, Erxian, Sanxian, Dabang, and Dahao. Among the roles of Dapingdiao, the black-faced and red-faced actors occupy the main position, forming an important feature of the opera. Its performance is magnificent, grand, with equal emphasis on singing, acting, reciting and fighting, rough and bold, and tough yet gentle. Dapingdiao has important academic value in the research of Henan local music and opera history, and deserves attention. After the 1990s, with the decline of the drama market, Dapingdiao has also suffered an unprecedented impact, the audience group has shrunk, the survival and performance conditions of the troupe are poor, and there is a lack of successor performing talents. At present, this ancient opera is facing the risk of being lost and urgently needs to be rescued.
