The Legend of Guan Zhong
Guanzi was an outstanding politician, thinker, military strategist and economist in my country. Guanzi's good governance, articles and achievements are miracles of the ages. Many scholars call him the great pioneer and founder of Huaihe civilization (culture). As the first of the 40 cultural and historical figures in China, Guanzi's statue is built in the China Millennium Monument. Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian" records: "Guan Bao Yiwu is from Yingshang." Zhang Zhan (Chu Du) of the Jin Dynasty's "Notes on Liezi" believes that "Guan Zhong and Bao Shu are both from Yingshang." "Yingshang" is not only an ancient place name in the Western Zhou Dynasty, but also consistent with the landform characteristics of Guan Gu Bay where Guan Zhong and Bao Shu were born. Guan Gu is located on the right bank of the Ying River (formerly known as Yingshui). The Ying River "turns here". If you take a boat downstream, Guan Gu seems to be in the Yingshui River. In ancient poems and essays, there are sayings such as "on the other side of the water", "someone is a "man from the East China Sea", "the bright moon rises from the sea", and "several green peaks on the river". "Shang" means "center" or "based on", and "Yingshang" means "center of Yingshui". Yinghe River is the largest tributary of Huaihe River. There is a cultural landscape near Guangu, Jianying Township, Yingshang County, the hometown of Guanzi, called "Wendi Chunfeng". It was named because Confucius came here by land. It was listed as one of the "Eight Scenic Spots of Yingshang" in history. Guanzi was more than 160 years older than Confucius and was his ancestor. Guanzi is the ancestor of Qi and Lu culture. Guan Zhong was engaged in business in his early years. He first served Prince Jiu of Qi and helped Jiu and Prince Xiaobai compete for the throne. Xiaobai won and ascended the throne as Duke Huan of Qi, and Guan Zhong was imprisoned. Duke Huan of Qi put aside his previous grudges and appointed him as a minister after being recommended by Bao Shuya. He carried out reforms in Qi, dividing the capital into 15 scholar townships and six industrial and commercial townships, and dividing the countryside into five subordinates, with officials at all levels to manage. A system for selecting talents was established. After three selections, scholars could serve as assistants to the prime ministers. The military organization of the township was based on five families as a track, ten tracks as a village, four villages as a company, and ten companies as a township. Taxation was graded according to the quality of the land, and labor service was appropriately levied. The plundering of livestock was prohibited. The government unified the minting and management of coins, and formulated laws for fishing and boiling salt, so the country was strong. On this basis, it helped Duke Huan of Qi to "respect the king and repel the barbarians" as a slogan, so that he "united the nine princes and rectified the world", becoming the first overlord of the Spring and Autumn Period. Therefore, Guanzi also had the reputation of "the best prime minister in the world". The legend about Guan Zhong has been passed down from generation to generation in his hometown of Yingshang.
