The legend of Guanyin is one of the ancient local folk legends in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, and one of the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists announced by the State Council. Guanyin's great compassion and kindness and virtue of saving people from suffering are widely believed by the Chinese people, and have long been spread to Japan and Southeast Asian countries. Putuo Mountain attracts a large number of tourists every year with its profound Guanyin culture and beautiful natural scenery. These cultural and realistic backgrounds are the solid foundation for the legend of Guanyin to be included in the national intangible cultural heritage list and applied for world intangible cultural heritage. On June 7, 2008, the legend of Guanyin was approved by the State Council to be included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list. The popularity of the "legend of Guanyin" is inseparable from the widespread belief in Guanyin in the local area. As early as Song Baoqing's "Changguo County Chronicles", there was a record of "Meicen Mountain (now Putuo Mountain) Guanyin Baotuo Temple". The Siming Illustrated Classic of the Qiandao Period of the Song Dynasty recorded that "Japanese monk Hui'e sent Guanyin". The legend of "Guanyin who refused to go" has been passed down to this day and has become an important link in the cultural exchange between China and Japan. In the Yuan Dynasty, the Western Regions monk Sheng Ximing wrote the "Putuo Luojia Mountain Biography", which recorded supernatural legends such as "Shancai visited the free and easy at the 18th time", "Guanyin appeared 32 times and preached with the class", and "Tang Dazhong Buddhist monk Chaoyin burned ten fingers in front of the cave and saw the great earth Guanyin preaching". The "Putuo Mountain Records" since the Ming and Qing Dynasties recorded more supernatural legends of Guanyin. The "Putuo Luojia New Records" compiled in the 12th year of the Republic of China specifically discussed "supernatural gates" and recorded 68 supernatural legends of Guanyin of various types. In addition to the records in ancient chronicles, as early as the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, a book "The Complete Biography of Guanyin of the South Sea" was circulated among the people, and in the early years of the Republic of China, the story book "Guanyin's Enlightenment" was passed down among the people. The legendary image of Guanyin is recorded in famous works such as the classical novels "Journey to the West" and "The Romance of the Gods". According to Buddhist legend, the 19th day of the second, sixth and ninth lunar months are the days when Guanyin Bodhisattva was born, became a monk and attained enlightenment, which are called the three major incense festivals. Each day has a story. Therefore, for thousands of years, Guanyin, as a great Bodhisattva with boundless Buddhist teachings, has been widely praised and believed in by the people of Zhoushan. Moreover, this kind of praise and belief has far transcended ethnic groups and national boundaries, becoming a Guanyin cultural phenomenon of "persuading people to be kind and peace-loving" and spreading all over the world.
