🎧  Listen to Introduction

Qidong Yugu originated in the Song Dynasty, spread in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and continued to develop during the Republic of China. Its singing style is based on the tone of Xiangnan Yugu, according to the Qidong dialect, combined with Qidong folk tunes, flower drums and Qi opera music reforms and developments, and people are accustomed to calling it "Qidong Yugu". Qidong Yugu is mainly distributed in dozens of counties and cities such as Hengyang, Shaoyang, Yongzhou in this province and in Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Shandong and other provinces. It has experienced six different development periods from inception to formation, maturity, turning point and innovation, and a group of famous folk artists such as Liu Xianzhong, Zou Zuxi, Zou Saiqi, Deng Fusheng, Zou Kunshan, Zou Huashan, and Zou Huachun have emerged. At present, there are more than 400 artists in the industry and more than 60 performance teams. Qidong Yugu has a rich traditional repertoire, which is known as "3,000 in Tang Dynasty and 800 in Song Dynasty". After the later arrangement, there are more than 400 traditional repertoires, such as "Yue Family Generals", "Yang Family Generals", "Xue Rengui's Expedition to the West", etc. The repertoire includes more than 300 pieces such as "Noisy New House", "White-haired Girl", "Women's Emancipation", "Chairman Mao Crossing the Yellow River", and "Tao Zhu Passing by Kelangtan". Qidong Yugu has its own school among the fishermen's drums in southern Hunan. The basic singing style is generally divided into three parts: the beginning, the main and the end. The lyrics are rhymed, the main part has a strong storyline, and the lines account for about one-third. The music of Qidong Yugu is beautiful and pleasant, with a strong local color. It is based on Qidong minor tunes, Qi opera, and flower drums, and at the same time absorbs the essence of local operas such as Peking opera, Yue opera, and Huangmei opera. The accompaniment sound has developed from a erhu to a string music with high, medium and low tones, and has infiltrated bamboo flute, suona, and electroacoustic music. Qidong Yugu has the following three significant characteristics: first, it is passed down from generation to generation and keeps pace with the times; second, it is popular and has a far-reaching influence; third, it is well organized and has a complete system. Qidong Yugu has been passed down from word of mouth to professional creation, from Daoqing Yugu to quyi artists to comprehensive art, and it is increasingly radiating fresh artistic youth. As an ancient rap art, its tone is authentic, its form is lively, and its venue is not limited. It is deeply loved by the local people and has been heard for thousands of years. As a relatively complete art form, the local people consciously set up a special organization to summarize and organize traditional repertoires, and at the same time constantly innovate, forming a special organizational structure, a complete structural system and a professional creative team. Qidong Yugu has preserved a group of singing scripts, showing a profound cultural heritage; it has preserved traditional folk art and demonstrated tenacious artistic vitality; it has developed its own system and has had a wide and far-reaching impact in Qishan and Baishui.
