Meishan martial arts is a traditional martial arts school that is popular in Xinhua County, Hunan Province, and is one of the national intangible cultural heritages. Meishan martial arts is a complex sports and cultural phenomenon that is relatively well preserved in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Guangxi. It is simple, pure, elegant, and powerful, and its functions of self-defense and fitness are integrated into folk customs, ritual performances, and other activities. It is widely spread among the people and is crazy about them. People practice it for a lifetime and pass it on, which affects the development of civilization in this area. In the early Meishan martial arts, Chi You was considered the founder of Meishan martial arts. In the witchcraft sacrificial martial arts dances held before and after each battle, Chi You gradually integrated the punches, kicks, strikes, and stabs that were used more successfully in previous battles and hunting, and led the tribesmen to imitate and practice repeatedly, separating them from production skills and becoming independent combat skills, forming primitive martial arts, and using them to win in many battles. After Meishan was established as a county in the fifth year of Emperor Shenzong of Song Dynasty (1072), there were three representative inheritors of Meishan martial arts, namely Fu Tianxi, Li Tianhua and Zhao Tianxiang, who were honored by later generations as the masters of the upper, middle and lower three caves. In the late Qing Dynasty, Meishan martial arts reached its peak. During the Republic of China period, Meishan martial arts continued to develop. Xinhua County established a national martial arts hall, held training courses and arena competitions. After the founding of New China, Meishan martial arts changed from a killing type to an entertaining performance and competitive project. The martial arts routines were improved, and folk martial arts activities became increasingly prosperous. Folk old boxers Yan Xizheng, Chen Yiqiu, Yang Yuben, Meishan martial arts scholars Chen Yonghui, Yang Zhihua, Chen Qin, Meishan martial arts inheritors Chen Liwu, Liu Mingjun, Chen Chaoyang, etc. On November 11, 2014, Meishan martial arts was approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China to be included in the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage list, with the intangible cultural heritage number: -80.
