🎧  Listen to Introduction

Tossing colored balls is a type of dance in the ground flower drum. It is named after the prop colored balls tied to bamboo poles, which are thrown and played with singing and dancing. It was originally often seen during the Spring Festival when people went out to play with lion lanterns. A female role holds the pole and throws the ball, playing the role of Guanyin, who is the core of the dance. Another clown plays the role of Lü Dongbin, who is playful and humorous. A young boy kicks and dances, competing with Lü Dongbin for love, and kicks the colored balls to humiliate him. In addition, there are several lantern girls dancing to add to the fun. According to legend, Lü Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals, had a not-so-glorious past in his early years, which was inseparable from throwing colored balls. This is because one day, Lü Xian, who was idle, could not stand the loneliness in the heaven, ran to Tianchi to watch Guanyin bathing and was convicted. Later, the emperor cut off his male balls and hung them on the wall beside Tianchi to dry for public display. Because he forgot about daily things, the male balls that were dried were blown to the mortal world by the wind. Some people picked them up and threw them for fun. Over time, it became a custom to throw colored balls. Nowadays, the movements of the characters in the dance are humorous and interesting, which are all related to this event. For example, the main dance movements include twisting twists, wearing sausage casings, biting the head with the tail, jumping over the river bridge, throwing colored balls, inserting willows backwards, bending elbows, hanging shoulders, covering the head with hats, crotch-protecting pants, sitting on a low stool, rolling a hundred snails, grabbing a handkerchief, and other rich dance postures, which are all proof. The music of throwing colored balls is mainly interludes of beating gongs and drums. When dancing, one person leads and the others sing, throw and dance; the literary structure is neat, with four sentences and seven words, and there are certain special lyrics to choose from.
