🎧  Listen to Introduction

Mugang Flower Stick Dance is a folk primitive dance with sports and competitive characteristics. It is mainly spread in Mugang, Fenglin and Pai City. The props are two five-foot-long, tough, crisp bamboos. The thickness is suitable for young people to hold, and the last section can be slotted and a few copper coins can be tied in and hung with red tassels. The basic form of performance is two people in pairs, or four people can form an interactive group. The performers stand opposite each other with flower sticks in both hands, and recite the lyrics at the same time, one word at a time, in harmony with the beat of the flower sticks. This activity is mainly for young people. The lyrics are full of loud, cheerful and romantic nursery rhymes. The beating movements are mainly "beating the ground" and "flipping in the air". "Beat the ground" is used to start, change the tune and coordinate. The opponent must cooperate tacitly to carry out the performance to the end. The lyrics require a brisk rhythm, catchy and easy to remember, so they are relatively fixed. There are more than 30 sentences of flower stick lyrics in Mugang and Dade. As the rhythm of double beating continues to accelerate, the speed of reciting the words also increases. When a skilled person performs, the knocking sounds become louder and louder, and the recitation of the words becomes higher and higher. Combined with the harmonious vibration sound of the copper coins in the bamboo and the interesting lyrics, this challenging performance of continuous technical movements shows a strong artistic appeal.
