Huagudeng is a traditional dance that is widely spread in Hefeng County and deeply loved by local people. It has been included in the provincial intangible cultural heritage list. Because Hefeng is located in the mountainous area of western Hubei, due to the barriers of mountains and rivers, the influence of factors such as the slopes and ridges, the dance styles are different, and the practical customs are also different. However, Hefeng Huagudeng can be generally divided into two schools, namely the Guannei Huagudeng with Dayanguan as the boundary and the Guanwai Zoumaqu Huagudeng. Although they are both performed by the two roles of Dan and Chou, accompanied by gongs and drums and singing by accompaniment personnel, the music and performance procedures are very different. In order to distinguish these two types of Huagudeng dances, Guanwai Huagudeng is now usually called Zouma Huagudeng. Huagudeng is mainly performed during festivals. Starting from the first day of the first lunar month, various street lantern teams composed of folk artists have set out one after another, either greeting every household in the villages and villages, or performing on the stage of the field dam with tables piled up as a stage. The most lively is that several street lantern teams meet to compete on the stage. There are two types of flower drum dance: civil flower drum and martial flower drum. There is no record of how long the flower drum dance has been in Hefeng in the local historical materials. However, according to the recollection of 76-year-old artist Su Fafu, his grandfather often watched flower drum dance when he was young, which means that the flower drum dance has a history of at least 200 years in Hefeng. In the local operas popular in Hefeng, such as Nuo Opera and Liuzi Opera, in order to enrich the drama performance, the flower drum dance is directly introduced into the script. For example, the Nuo Opera "Hu's Lantern Viewing" uses the flower drum dance as an important plot in the script. These ancient operas and ancient plays with a long history of 300 to 400 years in Hefeng have further pushed the spread of the flower drum dance in Hefeng to a long time ago. As for the formation of Huagudeng, most artists introduced that "at the beginning of the chaos, the flood reached the sky and human beings were wiped out. The Jade Emperor sent a golden boy and a jade girl to the earth to control the flood and save people. The water receded, but human beings were gone. The brother and sister were forced to get married and reproduce the human race. The brother and sister were unwilling. Zhang Gu Lao asked the brother and sister to roll millstones, plant melons, and run around the mountains to test the will of heaven. Finally, the brother and sister got married." This theory is similar to the legend of the origin of human beings of the Tujia people. This dance is related to commemorating the ancestors of the Tujia people. It also conforms to the national psychological state of the Tujia people who despise the holy gods, value the ancestral gods, and the unity of gods and humans.
